tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 12/11/2010 21:34

really not sure about the following:

Matilda
The Incredables
Nanny Mcfee
The Borrowers
Chalie and the Chocolate Factory (the one with Jonny Depp)

Oh and Shaun the Sheep worries me too!

What do you think?

OP posts:
mrsmindcontrol · 12/11/2010 21:37

what are you asking exactly?

thisisyesterday · 12/11/2010 21:38

i think it depends on the 3 yr old. you know your child so go withj your instincts

put it this way, it isn't going to harm him by not seeing them. so if you are unsure then just don't show thejm :)

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 12/11/2010 21:39

Sorry.....well are they a bit violent, scary,.....I guess I'm wondering if they are suitable really.

choufleur · 12/11/2010 21:40

Shaun the sheep? What worries you?

c0rns1lk · 12/11/2010 21:40

depends on the child
Matilda is a bit grim I think

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 12/11/2010 21:40

Can these films harm young children?

OP posts:
ZombiePlanB · 12/11/2010 21:41

Haven't seen the others but how does shaun the sheep worry you??

Unless it's the one where they dress the scarecrow as a butcher - that is very funny.

JarethThePomBearKing · 12/11/2010 21:41

erm... you are wrong about Shaun the Sheep (definitely)

Not sure about Incredibles

I've seen Matilda and think it's unsuitable on the basis that DS wouldn't like it (would be bored)
Haven't seen Nanny McFee or the Borrowers
DS has seen Willy Wonker and the Chocolate Factory and absolutely LOVED it (not seen the Johnny Depp version, but I don't see how that would be any more disturbing tbh!)

Would you let a 3yo watch Mary Poppins? I wouldn't...

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 12/11/2010 21:42

Well Shaun is quiet violently flung about at times Grin and it is on CBBC so I guess its more for older childern anyway

OP posts:
Meglet · 12/11/2010 21:42

DS is 4 and he hasn't seen a film yet (attention span of a gnat - like his mum) but I'm going to get Jungle Book for him as he might watch it when he's poorly.

The Borrowers might be ok, although TBH I can't remember much about it. The others will have scary bits in them.

NotShortImPomBearSized · 12/11/2010 21:42

Matilda - prob can be a bit scary
The Incredibles - I'd say it's ok
Nanny McFee - Prob a bit too old for 3yr old
The Borrowers - never seen it!
Charlie & Choc factory - let dc watch the original, far less scary

Shaun the sheep?!

ZombiePlanB · 12/11/2010 21:43

'bit violent, scary,'

shaun the sheep

Did you get it mixed up with Freddie Kruger?

PFB perchance?

missorinoco · 12/11/2010 21:44

Shaun gets flung about - have you seen what the do to Jerry?! (As in Tom and Jerry)

OP, my 3 y.o. wouldn't sit through any of those, except Shaun the Sheep, which I think I am mixing up with Timmy Time at the moment so can't comment on.

JarethThePomBearKing · 12/11/2010 21:44

Can these films harm young children??

NO. of course not..

Did you see the thread recently about Bambi/Dumbo etc and those affecting children? I think you're a bit nuts to suggest that Shaun the Sheep can affect kids... DS has loved it since before he was born (seriously)

choufleur · 12/11/2010 21:44

Did you watch Tom and Jerry as a child? That's quite violent.

JarethThePomBearKing · 12/11/2010 21:45

Not to mention Road Runner etc

ApocalypseCheese · 12/11/2010 21:46

Coraline scared the shit outta me

CommanderDrool · 12/11/2010 21:47

I don't think children ghat young have the attention span for a film

Just stick Charlie and Lola on

pozzled · 12/11/2010 21:47

Well my DD is quite keen on the Incredibles, she's 2.3. I don't think it has damaged her. I haven't seen the others recently so not sure, but surely it all comes down to the individual child? And if you're unsure I'd wait a bit as not watching them is not going to cause any problems?

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 12/11/2010 21:49

Grin Timmy and Shaun are closely related but Shaun is by far the naughter sheep...

How about Monsters Inc

OP posts:
JarethThePomBearKing · 12/11/2010 21:50

CommanderDrool - you should see a 3yo watch My Neighbor Totoro then.

We have films for our 3yo every Saturday morning now (often Ghibli films, sometimes pixar etc - never pure evil Disney [spit])

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 12/11/2010 21:51

DS will sit for ages watching a film....loves them (quiet helpful as I am stuggling to get baby and him fed/bathed/story/bed all together so there are parts of the day when its quite helpful......need to get that sorted really)

OP posts:
blondiemermaid · 12/11/2010 21:51

charlie and the choclate factory terrified my 2 ds they only caught bit with squirrels and terrified them but the original is ok

JarethThePomBearKing · 12/11/2010 21:51

Monsters Inc is great! DS watched it last weekend and found it hilarious Grin

I think the monsters being afraid of the children is really useful actually!

Onetoomanycornettos · 12/11/2010 21:56

It all depends how much your three year old scares easily. My two love things like Monsters Inc., Matilda and so on and have been watching them since three (or younger for the second). However, a friend visited with a three year old and they were scared of Monsters Inc. My youngest was scared of E.T. when she was three (which was an error on my part, letting her see it) but she just avoided the video, she wasn't traumatised or anything.

I used to stand in front of the telly when the chicken got its head cut off in Chicken Run when they were about three, they watched the rest, I don't bother now they are five and six and extremely interested in how animals are killed for meat anyway...
