YABU its a forum not a ffin academic paper.

i cant spell, my grammer is good if have to write something important official or for uni but if its ledgable then dont stress it.

correcting my mistakes will not actualy put you any higher on your pedastool. TBQH i do not make a spcial effort on here to improve my spelling and neither should I....its just judgy pants to make you feel more eduacted, important or more just in your opion than mine, im assuming, of course!

but that is how it feels when people pick others up on it and it tends to be when They are losing the argument or feeling like they cant compete so they revert to i think you will find that should be blah and not blagh

My pet hate is people who use grammatically correct English at the expense of style.

His/hers instead of theirs

Boldly to go instead of to boldly go

and

Oh dear instead of well fuck me sideways.

I think a lot of us are multi-tasking, either BFing, grabbing five minutes or are at the evil will of predictive spelling on mobiles or ipads and the like.
Apart from the odd post, it is clear to see that 99pc of MN are intelligent and educated, just too busy to be writing at the same standard ONE would use for an exam.

I share your pet hates (as an English teacher). However, I would never draw attention to the grammatical or spelling errors of people I don't know. It seems very rude to do this, not to mention a bit "superior" and smug. I make a fair few errors late at night too, and an ex-colleague pointed one out the other day. I was mortified tbh, as in 3 years on Facebook I'd not made a single error. Plus, she pointed it out knowing that I had 130 ex-students on my friends list. I told her that it was awkward for me, her pointing it out, but she laughed about it. I haven't taught for years and am on Planet Baby at the moment. Do I give a shite if I spell a word wrong? It's not like I'm writing professionally, man! Gimme a break!

Stinkypants I really can't spell for toffee, in RL I ALWAYS use a spellchecker. MumsNet doesnt have one, so shall I just not bother to post incase I upset you?

YABU diversity is the spice of life, init? Otherwise you would only have posters from the same educational backgrounds talking the same old shite.

oooh quite a debate! i never actually DO correct people, that's what the post is all about - i always suppress the urge as i know it's not important and would offend.
btw i LOVE the word pedastool above and think it should be changed to this (-;
the apostophe lady - if nothing else this post has brought me immense happiness that you have mastered apostrophes so well.

As long as the post can be understood, I think YABU, rude, judgemental and should get a life.

If it is on a business document I would find it unacceptable and expect a redraft.

However, on Mumsnet (a social activity) I think people who correct others should keep the corrections in their haed, feel smug about their superiority in their head or bugger orf! Would you correct another adult's grammar in RL? If you would, you are asking for someone to punch you in the gob.

I have found spelling mistakes in novels and they have supposedly been proofread and rechecked a dozen times.

I'm writing this at the same time as eating an orange.Grin

The problem is, I have yet to meet anyone whose grammar is perfect - even if they think it is. I will admit my pet hate is using "should of/could of" when it should be "should have/could have." I don't know why that winds me up so much. Other errors don't really bother me. Please excuse any of my own!

I would rather be told about my mistakes, though, rather than go on blindly thinking I'm getting it right.

YABU.It's not your place to correct, and in any case I always assume most people know but make slips because they are concentrating on the wording of their post or typing too fast.
The thing I do think is that people who do the correcting might as well wear a bell round their neck and a sandwich board with the wording 'I have low self esteem' on it!

I don't think you are being unreasonable to want to correct spelling and grammar, but I accept that some people find these hard and/or not as important as I do.

I do have a sneaking desire to run amok through the world with a red pen, correcting all the mistakes I find - especially ones in professionally printed/produced items, like shop signs and notices. A printer or sign maker should make sure that a sign is correctly spelled and grammatically correct, even if the order from the client is not.

And yes, princessparty, I do have low self esteem, but that is due to years of bullying at school (because I worked hard and got good marks, and because I didn't have the local accent), plus the fact that my parents dismissed the bullying and did nothing to support or help me. Add to that my weight, my failure to breastfeed, and my myriad parenting failures (as percieved by me), and hey presto, low self esteem.

My ability to spell and use grammar correctly is one of the few things about myself that I am even a little proud of.

surely then you can understand being picky about spelling may affect someone else esteem.as it is a harsh unnecessary criticism
