www.ukcaravans4hire.com/caravans-in-northwales.html

I was just looking at these because my DH has just veto-ed two weeks in Japan and I'm miffed.

Is it legal that a caravan park can say no same-sex groups?

I get it that it might actually be about rowdy stag parties etc, but doesn't that make it pretty easy for them to decline to rent out to gay couples?

biscuit me if you like, I was just quite open-mouthed as a first reaction.

I've stayed at campsites with friends when younger the no groups rules refers to groups more than 2, i.e. rowdy stag parties like you mentioned. I massively doubt anyone would decline to rent out to same sex couples.

NotAnotherBrick · 12/11/2010 11:21

Yes, it's the stag/hen party thing, but usually most places say no same-sex groups of more than 4 people or something like that.

And of course it's legal - you can allow or n not allow whoever you like on your property.

NotAnotherBrick · 12/11/2010 11:21

And it's got fuck all to do with gay couples IMO - what about two men on a walking holiday together?

I would ring them and explain the situation.

jybay · 12/11/2010 11:21

To be honest, these places have had "no same sex groups" for donkey's years. Way before there were many openly gay couples. I think it's much more about rowdy behaviour than homophobia.

musicposy · 12/11/2010 11:22

We rented caravans for years and I think it's because they're aimed at families and couples and want to deter groups of rowdy "youths" keeping the toddlers awake.

I'm sure they allow same sex couples - they'd be on very dodgy ground if not!

storminabuttercup · 12/11/2010 11:22

Loads of places say this. I think 'group' is the important word.

Lexilicious · 12/11/2010 11:22

Thanks moraldefective, I've never had one of those before!

There have been test cases of B&B owners picking who they have to stay though, haven't there. Or has my MIL been reading her Daily Heil at me again?

But it doesn't say 'couples' it says 'groups' very distinct difference

xstitchsparkler · 12/11/2010 11:25

I was refused on same sex grounds for wanting to take my dd on holiday as a single mum. Needless to say they won't be getting my business in future. I had always assumed it was to stop rowdy hen and stag parties.

cestlavielife · 12/11/2010 11:26

i think a "group" would be more than two.... and a group of men or women on a walking holiday may be just as rowdy at night as those on a stag/hen do.

it means if you have children you know it will likley be "quieter"...

nocake · 12/11/2010 11:27

There was a case recently where a gay couple were turned away from a B&B. Hang on, I'll find it - here

It's against the law to discriminate on the grounds of sexual orientation so the owners of the B&B were reported to the police. I don't know the eventual outcome.

Deliaskis · 12/11/2010 11:42

There are quite a lot of campsites and holiday rental properties that say no all male/all female groups, and when i was younger, every time I have rung and asked if me and my female friend could come, they have all said of course, we mean no large groups. I don't think it would have occurred to them to say no to 2 guys on a walking holiday, 2 girls (as we were) on our summer holiday, or a gay couple for that matter. It's just for groups that are going to be rowdy.

I think the campsite we go to defines groups as more than 4, or bookings of more than two tents together.

FindingMyMojo · 12/11/2010 11:43

Stag/hen groups in the confines of a caravan park has to be something to be avoided at all costs surely? They would probably upset every other guest in the joint, and caravan parks are widely used by families. I think it's the owners duty to other guest to steer these groups away from the park to more suitable accommodations Grin

deepheat · 12/11/2010 12:40

Me and a few lads went to a campsite in Deon a few years back which had the same rule. We actually had to pretend to be two gay couples to pitch our tents, so would assume that usually it is an effort to put off stag/hen parties etc.

On the other hand, there was a case in the news last year where a B&B owner had this rule and refused a gay couple admission on moral grounds. A complaint was made but the local authority said he was within his rights as it was his home.

maighdlin · 12/11/2010 12:50

I phoned up a major campsite chain to check my DB and partner could rent a caravan to join my family on a holiday in Wales. The guy I spoke to got really flustered and worried that he was going to say something homophobic, but eventually confirmed its to stop stag/hen parties and that all couples of any sexuality are free to stay :)
I quite enjoyed my caravan holiday in Wales too Blush

NeverArgueWithAnIdiot · 12/11/2010 16:56

OMFG! I used to work in a caravan park, and we had exactly this issue in the mid-90s. Guy rang up to book a place for "a couple of guys". Based on previous experience, I made the (what I assumed to be natural) assumption that it was a couple of lads and a carful of beer. Apologised and said "couples or families only, I'm afraid". At no point did he say they were a couple.

The next thing I heard, I was getting phonecalls from a national radio station asking why we were discriminating against homosexual couples. Hmm
