to have told these girls 'no'?

I was queueing up in the supermarket earlier today when two young girls (say, 16/17 yo?) asked me if I would buy a bottle of red wine for them - apparently it was to be a present for someone.
I've no doubt it was - who likes red wine at 17 yo? Grin
I told them 'no, I'd be breaking the law, go away and get older!' they got rather huffy and stalked off, and I mentioned it to the checkout lady.
As I say, I'm pretty sure they weren't buying it for themselves, but all the same, I didn't particularly want to break the law, and I'm sure the checkout lady would've been in trouble too!
Was I being 'the fun police' or did I do the right thing?

You did the right thing.

bettymoody · 11/11/2010 14:32

DUR what do you think
nob end!

NoahAndTheWhale · 11/11/2010 14:32

If they had been 18 or older then they would have had ID with them and could have bought it themselves. The fact they asked you to buy it means that they weren't 18 and so wouldn't have been able to buy it.

greenbananas · 11/11/2010 14:33

Of course you did the right thing. It was very unreasonable of them to get huffy.

begonyabampot · 11/11/2010 14:33

Im worried you even have to ask.

olderyetwider · 11/11/2010 14:34

Good on you, not fun police at all!

Thingumy · 11/11/2010 14:35

Quite impressed with the red wine need

Around here they ask you to buy Lambrini or cider.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 11/11/2010 14:35

I loved red wine at 16/17. Grin So you definitely did the right thing.

Diziet · 11/11/2010 14:35

OOOh handbags at dawn bettymoody , sorry I spoke I'm sure!
Thank you for all your OTHER polite replies, I just sometimes worry that I'm a bit of a party pooper, that's all.

Blimey, do you speak like that in rl?

nickelbangBANGbang · 11/11/2010 14:36

you were a party pooper, though! Grin

you did the right thing.

bettymoody · 11/11/2010 14:37

i do actually.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 11/11/2010 14:38

I always decline to buy booze/fags for desperate teenagers. We had to be more ingenious than that, and I like to encourage a work ethic.

Diziet · 11/11/2010 14:39

Ahem:

bettymoody · 11/11/2010 14:40

Its a very male thing to say isnt't it " handbags at dawn"

Ooopsadaisy · 11/11/2010 14:40

You did good. I refuse to buy ciggies for people too. It was so easy to buy alcohol when I was young - I was buying cider at 14 (and I really didn't even look 14) back in the '80s.

HappySlapper · 11/11/2010 14:41

They're lucky that most wine is in a screw top bottle these days. In my day, we had to knock the cork inside the bottle with a stone Grin

WassaAxolotl · 11/11/2010 14:41

Unless you really, really, really wanted to risk paying a fine of between £80-£500, with maybe a criminal conviction on top, you did the right thing.

the law

Diziet · 11/11/2010 14:41

I'm in touch with my masculine side...Grin

EricNorthmansMistress · 11/11/2010 14:43

YANBU! I'd do it for a 17yo I knew in certain circumstances but not for strangers! No way. You would be breaking the law innit!

Diziet · 11/11/2010 14:43

Thank you, WassaAxolotl , I am reassured.

Thinking about it, I used to like a port & lemon ... and what was the other one... rum & black!!
I prefer port on its own these days. Grin

My dh got asked by a couple of teenage girls to call one of their dads and pretend to be the other ones dad and say she was staying over at their house for the night, when really they were going clubbing with some lads they were with.

He declined but they kept begging and pleading until I pointed out that if something happened then no-one would actually know where they were. I don't think they were convinced of the error of their ways but they went away to ask someone else probably.

newwave · 11/11/2010 17:17

At 15 me and my mate were having a few before going out clubbing or as my Mum thought going round my mates house, funny but my mates mum thought the same :)
