I work in a hospital next door to M&S. After work I goin once or twice a week and buy stuff. Have done for five years or so. Yesterday I got a few groceries some bibs and some socks. I tried to buy 4 lagers for dp. I am 27. I was asked for ID as 'i don't look 25', fair enough. However I don't have a passport or driving licence, in the past I have shown my birth certificate and work ID showing I'm a nurse at the hospital next door which has my picture on.
Yesterday the polite assistant who asked me for ID said she wasn't sure about accepting my birth certificate but would ask the manager. He came over laughed at me, said it was a £70 fine from his own pocket for serving under age drinkers and snatched lager from till as if I were a naughty school girl. Huge queue of people watching, I was really embarrassed. Aibu in that he could probably have handled this better and used discretion in looking at the ID I had?

I actually hate the Think 25 thing - I have no problem with askign for ID if you think the person doesn't look old enough, but now you have to look older than 25 to get away without ID.

It's insane.

If someone is asked for ID as they look younger than 25, and they say they are over 25, I think they should be allowed that.
how many 17 year olds would say they were over 25? none, I bet, or if they did, they would say 25, not over 25.

Exactly. Let's all pop down to m&s and buy some fizzy wine. I feel much less angry about it now as it's not just me obviously. letter is in the post.

It needs to be a photo ID you show and most shops are understandably picky about which ones they accept. Would have thought a nurses badge would be enough if it had your photo on it, but I personally would never accept a birth certificate.

YANBU at being cross with him for laughing at you, no need for that.
