How long is too long in the loo?

lavenderbongo · 11/11/2010 09:07

My DH and I have just had this discussion and I would like to canvass peoples opinions on this issue.

DH is very regular and spends 30-45min in the loo every evening. This annoys me beyond belief as its eating in to our only time together during the day. He takes stuff to read and even his laptop in sometimes. I just don't understand why it takes so long. Surely 45 minutes is over the top. I am lucky if I get 5 minutes in there before one of the kids interrupts.

So what do people think is 45 minutes too long?

He's in there having a tommy

Anniegetyourgun · 11/11/2010 10:14

Er, it's not just a man thing to read quietly in the loo Blush

MooMooFarm · 11/11/2010 10:18

Tell him he'll get piles!

Even if you are not pushing one out all that time, you are subconsiously relaxing your bum muscles in a way that you wouldn't if you weren't on a loo, and over time that causes piles Shock

ligbinz · 11/11/2010 10:18

My Dad has always done this, to the point that he has patches of hair missing from his thighs where he has rested his elbows on them to read on the loo for so many years!!

I have to confess that it is a family trait and I have been known to disappear with a book into the bathroom for a while. It drives dh mad he doesn't understand it all!

thelunar66 · 11/11/2010 10:19

Agree with MooMoo DH did get piles!

PocketMouse · 11/11/2010 10:21

Maybe it's a muscle thing. (in that men don't have the same pushing equipemt that women do) Wink

HonestyBox · 11/11/2010 10:31

Yup, dp has piles.

madonnawhore · 11/11/2010 10:33

Blatantly having a wank.

springlamb · 11/11/2010 10:39

My father used to take a cup of tea into the loo with him! (yeah I know yucketty yuck yuck)
But even he didn't take 45 mins. He is sleeping in there, must be.

sparkle12mar08 · 11/11/2010 10:45

Why would anyone sit in a room that has human waste aerosolates in it for any longer than they have to? If you want to read a book or go on the computer do it in the bedroom. It's digusting behaviour and I would seriously question the intelligence of anyone who does this. Genuinely. And I sure as hell would not touch that laptop ever again...

Tidey · 11/11/2010 10:46

DP is thankfully quite quick going to the loo but takes bloody ages in the shower. I take 10 mins to shower at the most, he's in there for at least half and hour. A shower to me means: wash hair, wash body, get out. He stands there for ages thinking about things and talking to himself. Confused I do hope I've not got the only loony DP who does this...

MaMoTTaT · 11/11/2010 10:48

Tidey - I take ages in the shower to - and yes thinking about things, and occasionally talking to myself Blush

it's the only time I get to myself where I can't be easily distracted by other things.

Lots of ideas, life changing decisions, and planning has taken place during my showers Grin

MaMoTTaT · 11/11/2010 10:50

Last night DS1 was doing his homework in the bathroom.

I sent him to bed - 1/2hr later looked upstairs and saw his bedroom door open, but light off, and the bahtroom light on. I called up to him and he appeared out of the bathroom and told me he was doing his homework.

I thought he'd actually be sat up there listening in to conversations down stairs........but no when I went up to use the toilet a little later I found his homework book and a pencil on the floor Confused

PocketMouse · 11/11/2010 10:51

MaMoTTaT - brings knew meaning to the phrase 'working it out with a pencil'

[boak]

Tidey · 11/11/2010 10:52

*should say 'half an hour', not 'and'

Lol MaMoTTaT, phew, I'm glad other people do it too! I suppose it is a good place for some quiet thinking time Grin

MaMoTTaT · 11/11/2010 10:52

ewwwwwww PocketMouse

Quenelle · 11/11/2010 10:55

My DH goes 'off to turn his bike round' about four times a day. Fortunately he's usually in and out in 5 minutes but the frequency annoys me. And he always has to go just as we're on our way out the door somewhere.

I would definitely be annoyed if he disappeared for 45 mins. I never manage a poo in peace and quiet, DS is always bringing me books to read to him or toys to show me.

Tidey · 11/11/2010 10:57

Is that a poop euphemism Quenelle? Never heard that one before.

Sugarmuppet · 11/11/2010 10:57

The things you learn. OH spends a ridiculous amount of time in the loo and he has got piles. Can't wait to tell him. Am going right now to remove his 'loo literature' on health grounds. YAY!

PocketMouse · 11/11/2010 11:08

brings knew?? knew? Gah, what's wrong with my typing today. Blush

Quenelle · 11/11/2010 11:09

Yes Tidey, my boss uses it too. Must be a regional expression.

My DH has piles too, so the too-long-in-the-loo theory doesn't necessarily apply. Unless it's total minutes spent in a day...

SuchProspects · 11/11/2010 14:38

My DH disappears for 30 mins or more. It use to annoy me greatly. I did not understand how he could possibly need to spend so long on the loo. But then I got a little constipated when pregnant and was spending longer than he does. It was no fun. So now I just feel a little sorry for him and occasionally suggest he consider seeing a Dr.

It takes as long as it take. It's a shame it's eating into your alone time, but it would BU to expect him to not go.

nickelbangBANGbang · 11/11/2010 15:59

I do read in the toilet, but that's because I have a history of constipation, and i read because i'd get bored otherwise. Blush

I don't suffer so badly now, and spend 5 mins tops i nthere, but when I was a child i could be 15-20 minutes before anything happened.

ex used to go to the toilet every day at the same time (to the second!), and spend 10 mins in there, but i've never known anyone spend longer than that in there.

It's weird to deliberately go to the toilet to have an unwind.
just weird.

lavenderbongo · 11/11/2010 18:25

Yes he is a bit wierd - but he is my wierdo so I guess I am stuck with him Grin

I am very glad he is not the only OH that does this. It has been along going "discussion" between us and I don't think he is ever going to change. However I will now warn him about the piles to see if that has any effect.

PlentyOfPockets · 11/11/2010 18:37

Not just a man thing - I can happily spend 30 mins in there with a book. It's peaceful. I don't have piles. At least I don't stand up to wipe Grin
