to not go on the Christmas Work Night Out?

I've just spent £200 on getting the boiler fixed which has eaten into my Christmas budget somewhat :(

Work Christmas night out involves set meal (£30) and drinks in poncy bar which I would never normally go to as a) it's not my scene and b) it's very expensive. So including taxi's the whole night could potentially set me back £70.

I'd rather spend the money on a day trip out with my family or something, but feel that I'm being a miserable bah humbug type by not going. Especially as I'm also not taking part in the office secret santa.

YANBU. Our work Xmas meal is usually a very expensive set meal in a restaurant quite a long way from both work and my home. I haven't been once and don't regret not going.

i hate office dos, really hate them, its like work...but dancing with people you don't even like.

OP, in your position i would take part in the secret santa - and make excuses for the do

ButPlasticine supposing you had already arranged to go out with your mates on the night of the works do you wouldn't be able to make it would you? So arrange to go out with your mates then.

I'm aghast at secret santa costing 15 quid
ours was always five quid

I already paid £5 deposit back in bloody September for Xmas do - therefore stating my intention to go on said do.

It's ok I will be the office Scrooge. It's probably a role I do well

I'd lose the fiver and say a family do has come up if you really don't want to go but why on earth did you say that you would if you know you don't like them. I have always been consistant with not going on do's. (Except for the leaving do this summer but it was someone who I am exceptionaly fond of)

YANBU I only go on the ones that work pay for....luckily that includes the Christmas shindig.

badfairy .... I can't be arsed going to the free ones either. Dh just calls me a miserable old moo at times but I like being either by myself, being with Dh or being with mates. I see more than enough of the colleagues with out sitting with them when the clock is off!!

I do like them. Ish. Just not THAT much. It's just the expense thing that's putting me off. If money was no object then I'd be already there gaddamit.

Unfortunately I work in public sector so there's no such thing as a free party :( And one of the positives of (probably) being made redundant shortly is I won't even have this dilemma next year
