I really wish I'd kept my maiden name for exactly this reason. Not that DH and I are about to split (heaven forbid, fingers crossed etc) but I've been Mrs DH for the vast majority of my working life, my reputation is by that name, if I changed it no-one in the industry would know who I am and it's similar for Cheryl (although I expect people would get the message fairly quickly actually)

Many people keep their married name after a split. Some do it to keep the same name as their children, some do it for professional purposes, some just can't be bothered to go to the hassle of changing it back.

If Cheryl Cole was trading on the fact that Ashley Cole was her husband, then keeping the name she aquired through marriage would be distasteful. However I think Cheryl has eclipsed Ashley in fame terms (except to football fans, I suppose). Therefore, she is keeping the name because most people know her as Cole rather than Tweedy now.

Wrt the assault, wasn't she accused of racism by the person she assaulted but that was not proven one way or the other?
