Got DS's for his third birthday this summer. He adores it and covers the mile to nursery in about 15 mins and BEGS to do it, rather than dawdling along or whinging about being in the pushchair.

It is easily the best-beloved thing I have ever bought him, and for hours of happiness/cost ratio, probably the cheapest!

SkyBluePearl · 10/11/2010 19:13

Worth every penny and the most loved toy we have ever owned. My kids zoom quickly everywhere on them and walking is never a drag. We did try a second hand cheapo scooter years ago but it was so awful and noisey. A real bone shaker, my kids couldn't hear cars coming or even hear me calling them. The wheels were so noisey as we walked along country lanes to school, it was dangerous.

lulubooboo · 10/11/2010 19:14

the maxi is 90 pounds!

My small 2 year old got a micro for her 2nd birthday. It's really meant for for 3 to 5 year olds but she handles it so well and covers a mile at speed.

ZZZenAgain · 10/11/2010 19:16

dd has one for older children. I think I bought it when she was 6, she still uses it now she is 10 and has got a lot of mileage out of it. I haven't regretted it

GrimmaTheNome · 10/11/2010 19:19

They are good, and they last, and they're strong enough for a grownup to ride (I mean the ones meant for older kids) [blushGrin.

They're reasonably portable so you can take them with you to parks etc

inchhighprivateeye · 10/11/2010 19:29

It seems a bit like GHDs in that everyone raves about them, but the distribution is obviously very tightly controlled, so you can never get them at a discount.

berryfreeze · 10/11/2010 19:30

ok i am a scooter virgin my DS wants a scooter for xmas but have no idea which one to get, what is the difference between micro and maxi?

TiggyD · 10/11/2010 19:37

Saw an adult with one. He was a trendy person probably in PR or advertising. He looked a complete tit.

lulubooboo · 10/11/2010 20:35

mini micro is for 3 year olds, maxi micro is for 5 years and up.

my dd has the mini micro scooter and loves it, she scoots to school and back everday, i'm getting her and ds2 the maxi micro scooter for christmas, i think it will be well worth the money spent, makes the school run so much easier.
Luckily for me my sister and my cousin work in john lewis so will get it with 25% off.

lanismum · 10/11/2010 21:30

Dd1 has the maxi and dd2 the mini (5 & 3 yrs) and ds 16 months can already use dd2s, so he will be getting one for chirstmas, they are FANTASTIC! so so much better than big clumpy bikes, my girls scoot to school/nursery every day, then I chuck them on the back of the pram to bring home, also, ours seem pretty indestructable, a brilliant buy!

nelliesmum · 10/11/2010 21:46

They had some in "Home Bargains", didn't notice the price but my neighbour got in-line skates there for a tenner.

macdoodle · 10/11/2010 21:47

My DD2 birthday is on the 28th dec, so a bit overlooked in the xmas fever! I have bought her a micro for her birthday and it is sitting hidden in the garage :) I bought a limited edition orange one so she can pass it on to her boy younger cousin :)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 10/11/2010 21:51

YABU. DS had the mini micro for his third birthday and it is definitely one of the best things that we have bought him. He still uses it pretty much every day (is 4 and a bit) and it makes the school run soooo much easier.

I bought one because DS had tried a friends one out (one incidentally that was a handmedown, so knew that they last). Nice and stable and easy to learn to use.

pippylongstockings · 10/11/2010 21:59

We have the one that has 2 wheels at the front - my son has ridden it since he was about 2 and a half - it took a bit of getting used to as you have to lean to stear them but he still loves it not he is nearly 4 but I guess he is more than ready for a proper 2 wheeler now.

libelulle · 10/11/2010 22:01

Only problem we had with ours is that some arsehole decided he/she would like it for their own little darling and nicked it from the park while DD was on the swings Angry Keep looking out for it, but given that there are about 15 of the things being zoomed around on in our playground at any given time, I'm on a hiding to nothing!

Tempted to buy a new one in one of the more unusual colours, but they are even more absurdly priced than the blue/pink ones, and can't really afford it in any case.

But yes, they are brilliant :(

BubsMaw · 10/11/2010 22:12

YANBU, we have one and they're great, but just 2yrs ago they cost £30 from John Lewis, and lo and behold when I went to buy one they were costing £46. We're being fleeced! Still bought one though as they're fab.

kodokan · 10/11/2010 22:15

Completely brilliant, and MUCH, MUCH more stable than the usual design of one wheel at the front and two at the back. With those, if you turn even slightly sharply at speed, the whole thing flips over.

misdee · 10/11/2010 22:19

mini micros are woth it for ages 2-5 IMO.

then after that if they still love scootering, then get them a JD Bug. best scooter IMO. robust and non-rattly.

Dando · 10/11/2010 22:19

yes, they are expensive. but brilliant. If you get one watch it - we have had one swiped in a matter of seconds.

They are good about sending out parts as well ime.

AnnieLobeseder · 10/11/2010 23:16

Anyone thinking about putting lights on their scooters now it's dark, I put my bike lights on the DD's scooters for night dog walks. The Knog Frog is absolutely perfect for the job.

hester · 10/11/2010 23:41

I anguished long and hard before letting dd graduate to the Maxi, because they're so chuffin expensive. But I think it's worth it for us: we don't drive, walk long distances every day, and all the cheaper scooters we looked at just didn't tick the boxes.

gaelicsheep · 11/11/2010 00:17

We got DS the Micro Lite as a present from DD when she was born. He was nearly 4. I'm slightly regretting getting the 2 wheeled one as he does find it difficult, but I felt the Mini Micro wouldn't have much use before he outgrew it. The problem is he has nowhere to practice, as there's gravel everywhere round our house and the road has a hill in both directions.

Any tips on getting him to be confident on two wheels? Just practice I guess.

I didn't think at just shy of £50 that it was too overpriced. It has to be safe after all. But since getting it we have seen a couple of others that look nearly identical but quite a lot cheaper - can't remember the brands now.

lulubooboo · 11/11/2010 19:58

I'm ALMOST convinced it may be worth the money! Has anyone got the joystick handle? I still feel reluctant to get my 5 nearly 6 year old a three wheeled scooter that costs 90 pounds! Maybe the joystick would make it worth while and give it more appeal for longer? DH thinks the joystick handle is a gimmick that DD won't be able to manage...
