'If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things'

I love books. From big dramatic plotlines and epic storylines to subtle and beautfifully written prose with well drawn characters. I like quirky books, classic books, modern literature, poetry - anything well written or engaging.

I almost never have to 'force' myself to finish a book but always do finish a book if I've started (why do we do that? Hmm) but thought 'If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things' was the dullest most over-rated dross I've ever read.

Or did I miss something?

And yes, this should be in books, but I prefer AIBU Grin

I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Actually did not get very far at all..

Have promised a friend that I will try again...when i am really bored and have no other books to read!

edam · 09/11/2010 10:17

No, the most over-rated book ever was The Interpretation of Murder about Sigmund Freud in New York. Although I'm prepared to believe If Nobody Speaks was pretty bad - don't want to have to read it in order to argue with you!

mummytime · 09/11/2010 10:42

I liked if nobody speaks of remarkable things. But then it really reminded me of the last weeks of Uni etc.

jybay · 09/11/2010 10:46

I haven't read If Nobody Speaks...but for my money the most over-rated book is Wuthering Heights.

i loved it!

diddl · 09/11/2010 10:52

OMG Wuthering Heights!
Don´t get me started.

Also,The English Patient.

Couldn´t make sense of the book at all!

Bugrit · 09/11/2010 10:52

Thought you were going to say the bible.

TallyB · 09/11/2010 10:54

I haven't read it, so have to disagree ... ime The French Lieutenant's Woman is the most overrated book ever Wink

mayorquimby · 09/11/2010 10:58

You've obviously never read "the slap"
somebody actually nominated that piece of fucking trash-lit for a booker prize.
The slap.
Nominated for an award.
Any award.
When it is the worst book ever written.

lecce · 09/11/2010 11:00

I agree it started wearing pretty thin pretty quickly, though I enjoyed it at first.

YABU though becuase the most over-rated book ever is 'The Time Traveller's wife." Henry is 12 and 42... What a crock of shit.

Eliza70 · 09/11/2010 11:17

Three words, "eat, pray, love"

Utter shite.

SlightlyJaded · 09/11/2010 11:28

Mayorquimby 'The Slap' is on my reading list at the moment... Hmm

I can only think of two books that I've started and never finished:

  1. Captain Correlli's Mandolin. I accept that I would have probably enjoyed this had I persevered.
  1. Notes from an Exhibition. I should have liked everything about this, but was bored.

If nobody speaks was turgid and dull; I didn't finish it. Has anyone ever tried 'My name is red' by Orphan Paruk WTF is it even actually about??????

Oh and The Labyrinth by Kate Mosse - Yawnsville USA Grin

upsylazy · 09/11/2010 11:30

Lecce, couldn't agree more about Time Traveler's Wife (doesn't it just have one L? Don't ask me why) Did nothing for me whatsoever.I kept asking myself if I was failing to "get" something that everyone else did.

If Nobody Speaks was dull but passable.

I tell you what, we really didn't Need To Talk About Kevin.

Doigthebountyeater · 09/11/2010 11:31

Slightlyjaded - I've just finished Notes From An Exhibition and I agree it was so dull and I felt not a jot of empathy for any of the somewhat formulaic characters. I've come to the realisation that just because there are loads of effusive quotes on the front of a book does not mean it is an amazing piece of work - it just means that the author is a journo and the reviewers are his/her drinking buddies (cynical)

goodnightmoon · 09/11/2010 11:32

YANBU. the author has a random connection to soemone in my family, so I know him, but i still can't say anything good about it. (ok, i never actually finished it either but i really doubt i ever will pick it up again.)

However, Time Traveller's Wife is probably more overrated since I don't think that many people have actually read "remarkable things."

I would also argue that the Slap is absolutely wonderful.

Psammead · 09/11/2010 11:34

I nominate Ulysses.

AbsofCroissant · 09/11/2010 11:36

YABU because everyone knows "the Alchemist" is the most over-rated book ever (I can't actually comment on nobody speaks, as I hadn't even heard of it before this thread, but let's ignore that).

I mean, people say the Alchemist was LIFE changing and what not. It felt like it was written for a 10 year old, and that's being generous. I have now vowed NEVER to read a book with a recommendation from Madonna on the cover - I should have known better.

Chil1234 · 09/11/2010 11:41

Having just endured 'The Finkler Question' I'd like to add that to the list. (But have to offer heartfelt support for 'We Need To Talk About Kevin')

Doigthebountyeater · 09/11/2010 11:42

The Alchemist is woo shite. Boak.

Doigthebountyeater · 09/11/2010 11:43

I like 'We need to talk about kevin'. Really enjoyed that one actually.

MaryBS · 09/11/2010 11:44

YABU, its Chocolat thats over-rated! :o
