i really don't want to do a 'posh' roast dinner, much to the shock of my dp ( who will do the peeling of the veg and make the stuffing)

so not alot left but to cook it.

i have not got a table this year, so want to do something diffrent

Just do something different!

PhishFoodAddiction · 08/11/2010 23:16

Why don't you have a buffet type meal instead? My mum did one last year and it was lovely.

I'm in an enviable position wrt Christmas dinners...I always get at least two Christmas dinners and I don't do any of the cooking. I will probably cry the year I have to make a Christmas dinner for the first time!

AuntiePickleBottom · 08/11/2010 23:21

it what i was thinking a buffet style.

we have a roast every week, and at xmas i just want something else

Nah, i'm sick of it, having my homemade chorizo, chilli, lamb and cheese burgers with my special wedges and salsa this year. Bloody sick cooking a dinner no bugger wants to eat.

Oh defo do a buffet then! It's much more relaxed.

You can always have a roast on Boxing Day or New Year if your DH wants one.

PhishFoodAddiction · 08/11/2010 23:37

(Sorry DP)

Joolyjoolyjoo · 08/11/2010 23:40

Well, I love my big Christmas dinners, but YANBU to not want to do one.

I do Beef Wellington now at christmas- turkey is overpriced, you need to time the cooking to perfection etc etc. I make the beef welly the day before, prep as much of the veg etc as I can the day before. Takes 30mins in the oven on the day, so dead relaxed. If people are happy to have a break after the starters etc, I don't need to put it in until we are ready.

A buffet could actually be more hassle- having to have lots of different things ready at the same time?

MoralDefective · 08/11/2010 23:48

Why don't you all go out for christmas dinner......
I'd LOVE to do that.

Kitta · 08/11/2010 23:53

Oh buffet on the day so easy, big bowl of salad, bowl of nice bread rolls (God bless Mr M&S and Mr Sainsbury)some cold cuts, either bought in or if you have time in the run up cook yourself, and then picky bits, bread sticks, dips, crisps, cheese etc so much more relaxed. Maybe a bit biased as personally can?t stand turkey, hate the bloody stuff.
IME the kids if they?re little really just want to play with their new toys (or the wrapping paper or the boxes they came in) if you?re in the kitchen you?re going to miss all the cute moments. And if you have bread sticks you can teach them the walrus impression. . .
And if you have invited anybody who is in full time work they will be SICK TO DEATH of turkey. Sorry personal rant, so far between my work and his and all his various clubs we are so far committed to 5 fu*king dry over cooked yet cold Christmas dinners

LelloLorry · 09/11/2010 00:04

YANBU.
The buffet idea sounds like a good one, but perhaps even more hassle if it's a hot buffet.
Which part of the dinner is your DPs favourite?
My DDs always love the stuffing, so if we were having a buffer I'd do them some stuffing for a sandwich or something iykwim.
If it's the turkey that might be a bit more difficult.

MoralDefective · 09/11/2010 00:12

Christmas dinner is only a (slightly bigger) Sunday lunch.
I/we usually do the veg and starters the night before, and it's always beef,no one likes turkey.
Stick it in the oven and it cooks itself.
We never have christmas pudding,no one likes it so we have fruit salad instead, admittedly home made 'cos everyone likes it!

fairycake123 · 09/11/2010 00:14

YANBU. Do whatever makes you happy. Start your own tradition!

Chil1234 · 09/11/2010 09:06

If the main problem is that you don't have a table it's going to be difficult to serve anything in quantitiy regardless of whether it's a traditional roast or a buffet.....
