John Barnes is commenting on the Chelsea/Liverpool game and has just announced whilst one air his wife has given birth, when asked is he off now he said "No, I'll stay until the end as we're 2-0 down" or similar.

Am I unreasonable to think he's a bit of a dick?

To be far he's a good omen Liverpool 2-0 up against Chelsea. Loving it.

Personally Id kill him but I know friends who havent wanted their DH at the birth, each to their own I suppose.

Posie - I think there's quite a difference between sitting watching football for fun, and doing it for ££££'s

MaM...that was in response to another comment!!

I wasn't fussed about DH being there. Infact he was only there one of the four.

oh Blush

I think he said to her before he left:

"You?ve got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They?ll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
Theres only one way to beat them
Get round the back"

Whether she wanted him there for the birth is beside the point - the baby had been born and he said he wasn't leaving. So modern birth fashions are by the by - I think men usually wanted to see their partner and baby pretty soon after the baby was born?

EdgarAirbombPoe · 07/11/2010 17:32

YABU Liverpool are 2-0 up

YABU as his wife might have said to him to go and if she is happy then no one else matters.

ISNT · 07/11/2010 17:36

But isn't he interested to see his new born child? Just seems really odd to me.

Northernlurker · 07/11/2010 17:37

ISNT - she's just given birth. Why would she want him rushing to her side whilst she's still scraping blood and goo off both of them? Imo husbands are quite handy for the birth but totally redundant afterwards except to make phone calls and hold the baby. One assumes Mrs Barnes has that covered.

MrsDinky · 07/11/2010 17:43

I was listening to Radio 5 a couple of years ago, and they were chatting to someone who had played for Liverpool in the 60s about a European match scheduled for that night, the presenter mentioned that player X was not travelling with the team as his wife had just given birth. The former player was stunned, he was clearly appalled at the lack of commitment to the team, but obviously realised it was not the done thing to say as much nowadays, he was almost lost for words, it made very funny listening.

ISNT · 07/11/2010 17:45

Not her want him - I mean I'm surprised that he doesn't want to see his wife and newborn ASAP. Even if men aren't there for the birth for whatever reason, they're usually keen to see their new babies, give them a cuddle, take a look at them, express amazement over how tiny their fingers are etc. I can't imagine DH not being redhot keen to see any of his new children - it seems really odd to me.

ISNT · 07/11/2010 17:47

I mean does it seem totally normal to people that on the news "you have a new son/daughter, will you be wanting to see them?" the answer is "no, it can wait"? Really?

vixel · 07/11/2010 17:51

YABU Liverpool are beating the league champions.

Northernlurker · 07/11/2010 17:58

ISNT - my dh wanted to be there and adored the dcs as newborns - but some men aren't like that and it is possible to be a perfectly good father but feel a bit overwhelmed and redundant in the face of a newborn. I think as long as this situation is normal for this couple then it's none of our business to judge it by OUR standards. Of course is Mrs B is on the phone in tears then he would be behaving v badly but I think that's very unlikely.

ISNT · 07/11/2010 18:02

I think it's a bad example (he is a role model) and slightly odd behaviour TBH. I'm not going to be persuaded otherwise, sorry!

tethersend · 07/11/2010 18:16

Well, at the end of the day it's a funny old game of two halves and the lad did what he had to do. He had it all to play for and he'll be over the moon but sick as a parrot at that one.

Or something.

Simbacatlives · 07/11/2010 18:21

I don't think that we can comment as we don't know her wishes. One of my friends refused to have her husband at either birth. She was insistent that she didn't want to be seen in a state of indignity or to have her sexual allure ( nor right words but you get drift) destroyed.

He waited in local cafe with my brother during 1st one and at home looking after ds the second time.

nookiebearisevil · 07/11/2010 18:23
