I've never ventured in there out of sheer fear but I've always wondered why there is an entire topic dedicated to......

Pushchairs???

With thread titles including such baffling words as Stokke and pramette and buggysnuggle? Oh and precisely who the hell are Phil and Ted? Confused

It all sounds so elaborate and confusing and....well....utterly pointless.

Aren't they just vehicles in which to transport our loin-fruit from playgroup to Greggs or am I missing summat?

Don't people just buy whatever Travel System is on offer at the start and then (once they've wised up) grab whichever pushchair is 50% off in the Asda Baby Event? (or even better inherit one from a family member)

Or is it just me?

VictorianIce I cringed at that too. You summed up my point exactly there MsKalo

Oooh look at us we've spent exactly this much money to feel like superior parents and part of a lovely Smuggy McSmuggerson clique.

Can I repeat my

oh, and i managed with my beastly cheap £120 travel system from mothercare after an emcs using public transport and/or walking up the hill we lived on at the time.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 04/11/2010 22:52

I get the push chair thing to a certain extent. It's a deckchair on wheels that is an integral part of life for years. It needs to functional, practical and not brake / go shabby in 5 minutes. Most people seem to see buying a pushchair as a one off investment to last all DC and don't want to make an expensive mistake. Fine. Did we not all over think a little during our first pregnancies?

What I don't get are the pushchair obsessives lost in a whirlwind of buying and selling in a seemingly quest for the perfect buggy. You see it with nappies too. Some people have literally had hundreds of diffident buggies Shock, Most odd. I worry a little for that type TBH.

SpikyBinkle · 04/11/2010 22:55

I don't get the pushchair as status symbol thing but I did end up doing a bit more research second time round in the hope that this time I might get one that actually fit into my car boot Grin

kelly2525 · 04/11/2010 22:56

I was bitch slapped by a member of the pram mafia, i cant remember if it was on here or that really annoying baby website beginning with B.

I was told that the graco travel system i was buying was a pile of cheap shite, but on the plus side it had a big shopping basket underneath.

I changed my mind and bought a mothercare travel system that cost a whole £108 in the sale, which is probably even cheaper and crappier than the other one, no doubt my baby is gonna be a laughing stock among the other babies, but its good for them to develop a thick skin whilst young

HystericalMe · 04/11/2010 22:57

My DS manages to break his pushchair every few months.

The footrest, or any moveable part always goes.

But he is 3, and occasionally it is still very useful to have a pushchair.

I've owned a good few ranging from £20 - £90

lissieloukatthosefireworks · 04/11/2010 22:58

lol kelly, do you think that babies eye up each others pushchairs and judge on babiesnet?

Kelly - I think the Mothercare travel system is made by Graco and is identical but cheaper and without the Graco badge. At least it was 10 years ago when I bought one.

I chose it for the big shopping basket and the fact it was a nice colour.

kelly2525 · 04/11/2010 23:06

lissie The babies might not, but im sure some of those yummy mummies do.

My baby is gonna be on AIBU on babiesnet complaining that his mother didnt love him enough to buy him a decent pushchair/travel system/pram

mutable · 04/11/2010 23:07

Oh... the Hauck Infinity Paradox is a special colourway! Wink

WassaAxolotl · 04/11/2010 23:27

I don't personally understand the people who go through pushchairs like Goldilocks went through porridge, but I understand putting lots of thought into it. I had a number of criteria for ours. Very happy with my Loola, which I got on sale because it was last season's colours!

igetmorelovefromthecat · 04/11/2010 23:36

My DD is 14 weeks and I have got 4 different pushchairs for her.

But they were all second hand bargains found in classified ads or car boots and they all serve a different purpose!

And I have never found the need to discuss them on the internet.

Until now.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/11/2010 23:38

When I had DD, the woman in the bed opposite who was on her 2nd said she'd had bad PND with the first and one of the things that went with it was obsessive pram buying - she'd ended up with 5 or 6.

BunnyLebowski · 04/11/2010 23:39

4 (that's FOUR) pushchairs that all serve a different purpose for a 14 week old.

Erm. Ok.

Rocketbird · 04/11/2010 23:43

So what are your interests then Bunny? Line 'em up so MN can judge them as twattish. And no I'm not a buggy fiend, they scare the shit out of me but, as has been said several times already, live and let live. No need for insults.

igetmorelovefromthecat · 04/11/2010 23:49

Well she has only used 2 of them so far! But she will use the others when she is old enough to sit up.

A breakdown for you:

  1. Icandy Apple travel system for everyday walk to school/going to town etc.

  2. Silver Cross stroller for when I can't be arsed with the big pushchair.

  3. Urban Detour 3 wheeler for dog walking/festivals/general off roading. Lies flat so she can go in it now.

  4. 3 wheeler jogger with massive wheels that I can use when she can sit up for the off roading purposes mentioned above. It did seem a bit excessive buying that one too but it is a dream to push on bumpy ground and it was a fiver.

See, makes perfect sense.

geekygiraffe · 05/11/2010 08:50

I'm due in 13 weeks (gah) and have been doing a lot of pushchair research (friends, here, Which?) in the aim of saving money in the long run, and getting the right pushchair in the first place. Aim to get one only, and for it to last any future children (this is baby number 1)...

ZZZenAgain · 05/11/2010 08:51

lol
I've just discovered "Promotional codes and vouchers". What interesting topics we have here

Morloth · 05/11/2010 08:55

I love my Smugaboo, it is a workhorse of the first order.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 05/11/2010 08:57

Mclarens are shit though. They wear out really quickly if you use them a lot.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 05/11/2010 08:59

We had three buggies all in use for one child at one point.

Proper push chair.
Mclaren as needed an umbrella fold for nursery.
Running buggy.

Unrulysun · 05/11/2010 09:02

I have a sling. And she's starting to get a bit heavy as we approach 6 months but I'm scared of buggies. :(

ethelina · 05/11/2010 09:02

I bought 1 buggy, it was relatively cheap ( under £200), it will last me from newborn to walking. It doesn't get replaced til it breaks.

eldritch · 05/11/2010 09:03

Wait til you see the Bugaboo Donkey (I honestly thought this was a joke - google it if you don't believe me! Grin )
