to not agree with our GP

DD1 has had a cold for the last 2 weeks. She is now feeling pretty grotty, has a temperature (not particularly high) and a sore throat and is now coughing up green stuff and sicking up masses of phlegm/mucus.

She went to see the GP yesterday. She was in there for under 5 minutes before coming out and saying that he had said there was nothing wrong with her.

She's 17 and not one for making a fuss or going to the Drs. Would I be being a bit PFB to take her to see a different GP?

Second opinion required IMO.

Uh oh am I going to get flamed? Confused

Thank you onceamai, I really don't know if I'm making a fuss or not TBH. She's just not getting better.

2 weeks isn't that long really, and if it's 2 weeks she's probably had a couple of colds one after the other (colds generally last about a week)

Is the stuff she's coughing up very very green, or just slightly off yellow? Is her chest wheezy?

How is she reacting to things like lemsip or other cold meds?

did he/she listen to her chest?

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 04/11/2010 19:46

No it's very, very green. Actually it looks like she is coughing up bogies Plus she is puking up this mucus stuff - lots of it, like her stomach is full of gunk. She says her chest hurts but I can't tell if that is from the coughing or because she has a slight infection. I'm really not very impressed with the GP. Have just asked her again and she said he didn't listen to her chest or anything, just told her she had a cold and it would go.

I bought her some Benylin. I've always thought the over the counter stuff didn't do much but she says it is helping. She's also having cold cure tablets which bring her temp down.

i would see another GP

JarethTheGoblinKing · 04/11/2010 19:49

Sounds like she's got a chest infection tbh, I'm very surprised the doc didn't listen to her chest.

Personally I think i'd leave it over the weekend and see how she goes, and if no better on Monday go back and emphasise the greeny mucous and aching chest.

MummyBerryJuice · 04/11/2010 19:51

That doesn't sound right to me. The green sputum, vomiting and chest pain sound more serious than just a cold bridge the GP examine her at all? If not I'd think you have grounds for a second opinion. If she was examined I'd keep a very close eye on her and any deterioration or if no improvement untie next few days I'd take her again.

PlentyOfPockets · 04/11/2010 19:51

Sounds like a chest infection to me. That's pretty bad that he didn't listen to her chest.

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 04/11/2010 19:52

God I'm going to have to go in with her Confused She's going to be mortified. Thanks, I think that's a good idea to see how she goes over the weekend.

I was pretty shocked he didn't listen to her chest too. He didn't take her temp either, even though she did tell him she felt feverish and that I'd taken her temp. She's not very assertive, bless her.

KurriPowderTreasonAndPlot · 04/11/2010 19:52

I'd see another GP, green gunk and temp. are usually signs of an infection, I'm amazed he didn't listen to her chest. Can she see a different GP, or go to a walk in centre maybe?

Meanwhile steaming might bring her some relief (am sure you know, but just in case - bowl of v.hot water, couple of drops of olbas oil or similar, towel over head, breath in the vapoury steam.)

unfitmother · 04/11/2010 19:54

Sounds a bit odd that they didn't listen to her chest.

I can take her back tomorrow. It's quite a big practice, 4 GP's, but we've not been here long and I've only seen the head honcho once. I've not seen this GP. She's just said she didn't really understand what he was saying either

Got to admit, I was convinced she has a chest infection and that's why I made her go.

OP posts:
jybay · 04/11/2010 19:59

She should have her chest listened to. Are you sure he didn't? - It would have been over her back, not her front.

This is probably viral so she probably won't need antibiotics but does need a doctor to check there is no infection on the lungs. (I'm a GP)

Booper13 · 04/11/2010 20:00

Why not go to the out of hours service - then it will def be a different GP. If you say she's worse/no better since previously seen then that avoids any potential criticism of original GP. However, if he really didn't listen to her chest, then you shouldn't be afraid to mention this as criticism is deserved!

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 04/11/2010 20:04

jybay she definitely didn't have her chest listened to, front or back. Have just double checked with her. I think I will take her back tomorrow and get her to see the 1st GP. I liked him, he seemed very on the ball.

I've been fretting about this all afternoon. I am so daft, I should have just asked on here.

I will take her back tomorrow to see a different GP. I will go in with her whether she likes it or not and make damn sure they listen to her chest and take her temp. Then I will feel happier.

Out of hours service here is many miles away at the nearest hospital. I live in deepest darkest Lincolnshire. We're a bit backwards here.

Thank you everyone :)

jybay · 04/11/2010 20:07

The chances are that the stuff she is coughing up is snot that has dripped down the back of her throat, rather than being brought up from the lungs. If this is the case, antibiotics don't help because it's viral snot!

I think you're sensible to get her chest checked though.
