to feel let down by my doctor?

I rang this morning as dd1 was up in the nigth with an ear ache, i was told to ring back at 3 to see if they had an appointment fair enough i suppose but then dd was sent home from school just before 1pm so as it was on our way home from school i thought i'd pop in and see if they would let me know for definate if they would see her today.

I went in at they said yes bring her back at 4pm, just as we got outside dd said she needs a poo so we rush back in and she doesn't really make it and poos herself and then lots more came out. I had to go and get loo roll from the receptionist and as it was now 1pm they were closing for lunch and the doctor was in the office. Dd was screaming and she was abit distressed and her ear was hurting :( the doctor came in the loo and just said dont rush and to not bother bringing her back at 4pm and just give her calpol.

Now to me just looking at dd you could see she was poorly and when you touched her you could feel she had a high temp.

Now am i expecting too much just to think the doctor could ave checked her over?

He was NBU to tell you to take her home.

He was BU to tell you not to bring her back.

hmm well he could maybe have been a bit more tactful but to be fair they don't treat ear infections as they are often viral and clear up by themselves in a few days

add to that a potentially contagious child with diahorrea and it was probably the right decision!

storminabuttercup · 04/11/2010 18:37

Did he perhaps think she had a bug that he didn't want passing on in the surgery? This is the only reason I can think for telling you not to come back. He should have been clear if this was the case!
Poor dd, hope she feels better soon.

The calpol will bring down her temperature.

I think the doctor was probably trying to help you. Your daughter will not benefit from being dragged to the doctors again - she'll feel much better warmly tucked up at home then hanging round the waiting room.

I read this as the doctor trying to save you having to schlep back to the surgery with a distressed child but it would have been better if he'd asked what you preferred.

Rare that you'll get anti-biotics for an ear infection. I think the doctor thought he was helping but could have been a tad more tactful.

Do you know if the school talked to the surgery ?

Probably also taking account of the fact that DD will be pretty distressed from incident and make diagnosis more difficult, when quite likely viral.

Not saying the decision was right, just some thoughts.

I don't think that if you'd taken her back later the doctor would've found much more than that she's got earache, an upset tummy, temperature and feels poorly anyway.
Are there more symptoms you think he should know about?
