Here...I asked for help to understand DD's year 2 maths homework and was told to let her do it. And asked why I needed to stress about it...oh yes..and told to ask the teacher tomorrow...she's busy ffs! She doesn't need me popping in....I have not asked DD if she gets it yet...but as DD is a young 6 she needs suppport with her homework...I cant support her if I don't know what the blinking homework means can I?

I am AWFUL at maths...that's how it is.

I help my 6 year old with her homework don't see the problem she's 6 not 16. I had help with my homework my husband didn't who do you think did better at school?

I got the same response in here for daring to cut out some food labels. Ah well!

Have answered your other post- basically, I don't think it's to do with you being awful at maths, but with the teacher not being clear about what she wants. After all, none of the people who answered the post were any too sure about the answer either. And if the teacher is not clear in her instructions, then I think it is worth pointing out, not necessarily by talking to her, just writing a note on your dd's worksheet should be enough.

Well, I posted advice on that thread and I find it quite rude to start a thread about a thread.

The teacher is there to help your DD to understand and she should not be too busy to explain something.

I am shite at maths too. If I don't understand, and DH doesn't understand then I have asked MN. If they don't understand, then I ask the teacher what she means.

That is her job.

Ok, read your latest post.

Here. Have some and a cup of tea. Or glass of wine. It is 6pm here, so not too early.

memoo · 04/11/2010 17:10

I'd be quite worried if I couldn't do maths aimed at a 6 year old

Fernie3 · 04/11/2010 17:12

That's not very nice memoo

huddspur · 04/11/2010 17:13

YANBU maybe you should look at adult numeracy classes if you really struggle with maths.

memoo · 04/11/2010 17:17

No, you're right, it was meant to be a joke but reading it back it just sounds mean

TheFallenMadonna · 04/11/2010 17:24

My DC's school sends home Maths booklets that go through what is learned in each year, and they offer classes (but only during the day) for parents to learn how they do maths IYSWIM. I think you should suggest it.

PhishFoodAddiction · 04/11/2010 19:08

I wouldn't have had a clue what that homework meant either!

I would have asked the teacher the next day what was expected.

Did your DD say she understood it/ had done something similar in class?

It just seems badly explained to me. Teacher's fault, not yours.

thisisyesterday · 04/11/2010 19:12

i think the people on the other thread are just saying that it's unclear and you need to check with the teacher what she means!

n0t that you shouldn't ask on here, or that you should just let her get on with it

thisisyesterday · 04/11/2010 19:14

in fact, i've read the other thread through again and i think people were being really nice....

if neither of you are sure about it then you do need to ask the teacher

ayjayjay · 04/11/2010 19:26

I second going to adult numercay classes. My sister has recently just finished these and gained her level 2 qualification. It has really helped her confidence and allowed her to help her children 5 & 7 with their homework.

ayjayjay · 04/11/2010 19:26

numeracy not numercay ... maybe I should be going to adult literacy :)

I'm a maths teacher, and I despair after having looked at some of hmk given to my daughters (age 7 and 9).

It has obviously not been thought out at all, a lot of it consists of web pages of problems that have not been fully proof read. (Which is a shame as most of the other material is ok.)

But... it only takes one crap question.

I honestly think that a lot of primary teachers are not comfortable with mathematics despite having passed a numeracy test.

Having said that, a huge amount of Primary teachers are absolutely amazing. The world as we know it could not function without them.
I don't know what the solution is.
