to think the firefighter did;n' need to be quite so graphic with his fireworks warning

DS2 (7yo) has had a presentation from a firefighter in assembly today, with the usual firework safety warnings.

He's been told he mustn't wear a nylon coat to the display, as "it will pull his skin off when it melts"

He's now saying he can't go unless I get him a new coat - he has a standard supermarket school coat and I can't even find an old one that's not nylon. He won't be anywhere near the fireworks FGS, but I find it difficult to make myself explain the CS2 that the firefighter was wrong/should be ignored

Oh God, I have NEVER forgotten that bloody railway film- didn't his laces get stuck (I know there was a link, tethersend, but I only watched the first 3 seconds and realised I couldn't watch it again!) Years later I went on holiday to a place just outside Barcelona with my ex, and the standard way of getting from one side of the railway platform to the other was to cross the rails- I was having panic attacks watching all the people with laces cheerily sauntering across! That particular horror never goes away (it's up there with the little girl who went with a stranger crying in the corner of a dark room )

So I guess the fireman has planted a seed, but maybe not such a bad thing?? maybe by the time your ds is 14/15 he will still be too scared to join in with the little arseholes teens that merrily mess about with fireworks and chuck them at cars!

Seems like there's a whole generation who grew up in the 70s and 80s who were scarred by public information films. Glad it's not just me. Grin

Thanks cakewench and grimma for the replies re fleece. Perhaps the concern is nylon against skin with nothing in the way as then it melts onto the skin whereas if it's waterproof trousers over other trousers it would melt onto the trousers underneath. Think I'll have to look into this more.

As Edam says, nothing's perfect so I guess lots of layers so there's time to put out the flames before they reach the skin? Not a problem on wet, cold November nights. Smile
