To think my friend who is convinced her son is allergic to organic food is a bit mad

or at least do this face to her Hmm next time she says it.

We went swimming together today and I had a banana for afterwards. Her son (nearly 2) wanted some and I asked her if it was okay - she asked me if it was organic. When I said I thought it was she said that her son couldnt have organic food as it brings him out in a rash. She then went into great detail of all the times he has waten organic food and been miserable and grumpy.

How odd! Yanbu!

gapbear · 02/11/2010 19:33

Weird! YANBU

KathyImLost · 02/11/2010 19:37

You should have said 'oh that's ok, I dipped it in pesticides before I came out'.

Maybe she has a very dry sense of humour. I like her.

TheEvilDead2 · 02/11/2010 19:41

Is this for real? Does she understand organic just means food before all the chemicals? Does she think chemicals stop people from getting rashes?

What did people eat before all those lovely chemicals were invented to stop rashes! Hmm

scurryfunge · 02/11/2010 19:41

She is having you on.

DeadlyNightShadeofViolet · 02/11/2010 19:42

No she was deadly serious.

I suggest you do as Kathy says! And have a totally stright face...

You could point out to her that all food and indeed her son himself are all organic (carbon based). If you really want to mess with her head also point out that all food is made of chemicals! :)

BikeRun40NextWeek · 02/11/2010 22:34

Aaaaarrgggghhhh! Chemicals! I have an ongoing rant about a friend of mine who refuses to let "chemicals" in her life/house, and will only use "natural" washing up liquid, washing powder etc ie: Eco stuff, not naturally occurring dishwasher tablets! Yet also dyes her hair, smokes and drives a car which runs on petrol!

I think the Royal Society of Chemistry has a competition a few years ago to give £1M or something huge like that to the first person to give them anything that did not contain chemicals.

cumfy · 02/11/2010 22:56

She's winding you up. :o

Get her a jar of DDT, to sprinkle on food.

Chil1234 · 03/11/2010 06:13

Actually... organic food can been treated with certain products (fertilisers, insecticides etc.) provided they are on the Soil Association approved list. It's unusual, therefore, but not entirely ridiculous that someone could be allergic one to those approved products. In a similar way, many people react badly to cosmetics that are called hypoallergenic or unperfumed.. because the chemicals used to neutralise the smell of 'raw' cosmetics can be harsher than perfume.

badfairy · 03/11/2010 06:27

I think she is either winding you up or she has got a bit confused. Maybe it's bananas full stop that he is allergic to but the first time he had a reaction it was to an organic one......I don't know, it all sounds a bit odd to me.

Chil1234 · 03/11/2010 06:36

Some of the Soil Association approved insecticides are soap-based, for example. So if he's allergic to soap that could cause a reaction. Organic apples are coated with natural rather than synthetic wax... but still means potential for allergy. It wouldn't mean someone was allergic to all organic products, full stop, but he could genuinely have a problem with some of them.

Organic does not = treatment-free.

DeadlyNightShadeofViolet · 03/11/2010 07:41

She definately believes it - she is of the 'all-food-is-the-same' school so I know she isnt winding me up. Also, her DS really wanted the banana so she wouldnt have refused without a reason.

I did try and explain what organic was, but she said that rice cakes and baby cereal that were organic caused the rash and so he isnt having organic anymore.

I value our friendship too much to say anythinh else, as she is a really good friend, but it did make me Hmm

MrsVincentPrice · 03/11/2010 07:48

I agree with chil1234, it is barely possible that the child is allergic to some treatment on some organic food, but it's much more likely that she's being weird.

cumfy · 03/11/2010 07:56

Try suggesting the GP to her: "they can carry out tests".

She clearly needs some help.

What will be next all fruit, all veg, all meat ??

MackerelOfFact · 03/11/2010 08:01

YANBU. What is her stance on home-grown food? Or is it the more pesticides the better? Hmm

She sounds a tiny bit barking, but I guess her heart is in the right place. Just, erm, perhaps not her brain,

Really irritates me how people say 'allergic' as it makes less of those like DS who do have medically diagnosed allergies.

badfairy · 03/11/2010 10:41

Ok she's decided that the common denominator between the foods he originally had a reaction to were organic so therefore, all organic produce will have the same effect.....sorry for my lack of political correctness here, but she is either a bit thick or bonkers ! Wink
