Bit of a strang one but could really do with your wise opionions please :)

It's MOT time for the car again this week and I was just talking to my colleagues at work about it.

They were horrified when I told them that car belongs to DP but as he has a company car I use his private car to get to work everyday.

Now, I tend to MOT it every year and pay for any work that needs to be done, petrol, tax, insurance, tyres etc.

DP uses car at weekends since he can't use his company vehicle for private purposes.

I've never questioned the arrangement since I'm the one who drives his private car on a daily basis but my colleagues seem to think I have mug written all over me.

AIBU? Hmm

The car I drive is registered under DP's name but I paid the tax on it since it's me driving it. I also pay for petrol etc. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

We bought both our cars between us, so even though one is 'mine' (in my name, and pay for all associated bits) and one is DH's (again, in his name), they are officially ours. DH helps me out with servicing etc.

Anyway, what you do as couple has really nothing to do with your work colleagues!

I know manchestermummy - DP can be a bit errrm.....how to put this, grabby at times if I let him get away with it so like to ask 'is this normal' sometimes.

Strange people at work are probably not the best judges for that though, you're right :)

My dh accepts that what's his is mine, and what's mine is also mine Grin

manchestermummy · 02/11/2010 13:54

Mushroomflumps we have the same sort of arrangement Grin

BibiBlocksberg · 02/11/2010 14:13

I'm obviously doing something very wrong since DP's slogan seems to be 'what's mine is mine and what's yours is ours Confused

Quite the education I'm getting here, thanks!! :)

I think as her DP is most likely paying the depreciation costs for the car, it is not unreasonable for her to pay running costs. I assume he bought the car in the first place?

cumfy · 02/11/2010 17:27

You seem to be getting a bargain in any case. Essentially a free car.

Not so weird DH has a good job, but I bought him his car and I pay for everything to do with it. He claims expenses of work and keeps them, but then there are other equally effects in our finances.
