Purely because I've just realised the Breastfeeding room in my local mall has free wifi? I'm sitting here on a vaguely comfy sofa and browsing MN :o

That's a perfectly good reason to be pleased your still breastfeeding.

nickytwotimes · 01/11/2010 15:13

YANBU.

Serendippy · 01/11/2010 15:14

Best reason for extended BF I've ever heard. Well done Smile

backwardpossom · 01/11/2010 15:14

YADNBU! :-D

Well done for going on so long!

MsKalo · 01/11/2010 15:15

U should be very pleased with urself for a whole host of reasons and u are giving your little one such a fantastic gift!

HalfTermHero · 01/11/2010 15:21

YANBU. Ain't nought better then a bit of free wifi.

Indith · 01/11/2010 15:25

Fantastic :)

Plenty of cafes have free wifi too though, I'd take the hot choclate and cake over the feeding room any day Grin That oculd be the reason behind my flabby bits though so perhaps you are better off inthe feeding room.

I need a child to bf. And a laptop. Just give me 9 onths or so...

FindingGuysMojo · 01/11/2010 16:29

YANBU - it's a great achievement in this day & age. Well done you - nice perks too.

I'm not sure 13 months qualifies as EXTENDED breastfeeding though serendippy?

FreudianSlimmery · 01/11/2010 17:14

Unfortunately it does count as extended in modern britain, I'm guessing because it's longer than average. But that's a whole other, much less lighthearted thread :)

lol... free wifi for breastfeeding mums.

Well done whatever your reasons. 13 months is a massive achievement.

"I'm not sure 13 months qualifies as EXTENDED breastfeeding though serendippy?"

Depends where you live. If you live in a rough area then 2 days is extended bf.

TryLikingClarity · 01/11/2010 18:02

reallytired it's a bit rude to say that about 'rough' areas.

Stats show that mums in 'rough' areas may be less likely to bf than those of us from leafy suburbs, but you can't tar them all with the same brush! I know mums from rough areas who bf for months and mums from posh areas who never bothered at all. Don't stereotype so much.

Well done OP you're doing great.

arses · 01/11/2010 18:08

How do you manage to bf and browse? I get kicked in the face if I try (11 month old).

FreudianSlimmery · 01/11/2010 19:18

Tis an acquired skill that's for sure :o really depends what mood he's in, if he's flailing about or staying still!

Agree about not tarring everyone with the same brush. Stereotypes/statistics presumably exist for a reason but at an individual level I admit to being very surprised about people's choices and it has really given my prejudices a shake.

Well done!

yanbu

booyhoo · 01/11/2010 19:50

ha, i get my nose picked for me if i try to breastfeed and browse Hmm

i am from what you would call a 'rough' area and to date we are on month 17 of BF. rough tends to also mean, not so well off and BF is free! Grin

wonderstuff · 01/11/2010 19:50

YANBU - I'm impressed at comfy sofa in bf room - I've only ever visited one nice bf room - in a big mothercare in Norwich - generally they put them in the babychange and they smell bad - but that is another thread Smile

reallytired · 01/11/2010 19:58

lol..TryLikingClarity

I live in a rough area. I don't know many breastfeeding mums who live near me, yet alone someone who is breastfeeding beyond one. It can be quite isolating to be breastfeeding beyond one when you know no one else who has managed beyond 6 weeks.

Eight years ago my health visitor told me that I was the only mum on her list who had breastfed beyond 8 months.
Sad

However in much of the world breastfeeding until FOUR years old is not unheard of.

otchayaniye · 01/11/2010 20:03

I'm going against the grain and will say that I don't think 13 months (or for that matter, 8 weeks, or four years) of breastfeeding warrants any gasp of awe. It's just how you feed your child (unless you have a preference or a particular problem or psychological issue) a bit like congratulating someone for breathing.

greenbananas · 01/11/2010 20:10

Well done OP. Good for you.

reallytired, I live in a 'rough' area too, and it's true that we have very low breastfeeding rates generally, but I am still bf my 2 year old and have a number of friends who also breastfed their toddlers. Smile

otch i think getting through those tough growth spurts is a bit more than jsut feeding your child. it takes a good deal of commitment and perseverance, not to mention mothers who develop mastitus and overcome all sorts of feeding problems. i agree that once things settle down and feeding is running smoothly BF can be as simple as just feeding your child but i do think that getting to that point is worthy of a bit of a pat on the back. even if you're giving yourself the pat. no one is looking for gasps of awe.
