to put my son in tights?

PavlovtheWitchesCat · 01/11/2010 11:33

he is 11 months old, dislikes socks, other than to eat, and so it getting cold toes.

I mentioned the fact that DH and I are putting him in tights (today in fact when I pop out to shops to buy them) to several friends whose opinions ranged from scoffing at the idea to actively telling me it is 'wrong'!

wrong? wtf? surely it is wrong to let him have cold feet?!

It is not like I am going to put him in pink stripey tights, and even then, wtf not?! he is 11 months old.

And now you mention it, why on earth are there no nice masculine coloured tights in the shops? Surely this is not a new idea to me?

Psammead

I´m also in Germany & tend to find children here often overdressed tbh.

Psammead · 01/11/2010 15:46

Yes.p diddl I bloody HATE it. I also don't know how the babies can stand it. DD sweats and howls when she is in anything more than a jacket and trousers. I see babies on a regular basis here, fully dressed, in a snowsuit with hood up and a wooly hat under that, and in a footmuff in a pram.

I get comments all the time that I should put more clothes on DD, but she would die, really. I really don't get how those babies sit there quite happily.

diddl · 01/11/2010 15:59

Well you´re supposed to dress thenm the same as yourself, aren´t you-only when very tiny I think that an extra layer is recommended.

I mean it does get cold here, but sheesh, all thouse layers for a 10 min journey to kindergarten & then spending the day there in just tights & tops!

This was after taking a snowsuit & trousers off!

For me the idea of the snowsuit was that you could dress "normally" underneath!

plupervert · 01/11/2010 16:12

It's worth considering that babies sit in their prams, not moving, while the adult pushing is likely to be warmed up from the exercise! Also, babies are so little, they haven't got the big core of fat heat that a grown person has.

krisskross · 01/11/2010 16:15

my son wore tights till he was 2, as threw socks off. amazing how many people commented on it- given that they were gender neutral colourwise. Do it! Better than old ladies telling you off because he doesnt have socks on (and of course better than cold feet!).

diddl · 01/11/2010 16:17

Yes, but when small they usually have blankets & when older a cosytoes type thing when in a pram/buggy.

jeee · 01/11/2010 16:20

How can anybody tell? I assume they're wearing something ovre the tights? I doubt if anybody even noticed my DS wearing them - and I didn't think it was important enough to mention.

AlwaysbeOpralFruitstome · 01/11/2010 16:38

Lunacy not to put boys in tights in cold weather! Still there's nowt queer as folk - when I had DS1 I went into M&S to buy some tights for him and asked an assistant where they were and did they have them in navy or red. On realising that I was going to put A BOY in them (horrors!) she gave me lecture about how they are not designed for boys and the seam would hurt his winkle (What? Through his nappy and a vest??Hmm) and would may cause him infection blah, blah. Loon.

His winkle is fine. He has picked out his future wife (although he's 5 so that's probably subject to change) so probably not a poofter (who cares if they are anyway?) and the tights have just last week been extracted from storage for DS3.

allhallowsandwine · 01/11/2010 16:40

they are selling boys thermal tights in lidle from mon 8th they look ok. I would

thanksamillion · 01/11/2010 19:13

I've got Spiderman ones for DS. (Also overseas somewhere that's very cold in winter where people would think I was mad not to dress him in them).

thefinerthingsinlife · 01/11/2010 19:22

My ds is also 11 months and in tights, I couldn't care less if people scoff, as long as my baby has warm toes he's happy and so am I

PavlovtheWitchesCat · 01/11/2010 20:01

I am very pleased that the general consensus agrees with me Grin

Of course, i am putting him in tights regardless of what my friends think, i just wondered why on earth they thought it odd! And clearly, they are indeed Odd!

DH said this evening that he would prefer not pink, but if that is all we could get, then pink he gets! This is because I went to buy some while spending too much in sainsbos toy sale shopping this evening, but they only had pink sparkly ones so I shall try Asda tomorrow before getting the sparkles! when DD was young, through the winter (6 months +) we used to just put a sleepsuit on her under her clothes, thinking about it.

Zara sells grey tights for boys and girls. So do h& m both stores have just been launched online. My son wears them under jeans. I dressed him navy leggings when he was younger( navy and stripy) he looked like a little cyclist!

littleducks · 01/11/2010 20:06

I saw that lidl will be doing www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/SID-84C0678B-3F4F67CC/lidl_uk/hs.xsl/index_15178.htm boys tights soon, no it must be catching on to have cool designs here too

PavlovtheWitchesCat · 01/11/2010 20:11

oh I am off to H&M and Zara which is right next to it! tomorrow of course, will be closed now Wink I did not see any when in H&M last week but was not exactly looking as not considered they would sell them.

Both my ds's have worn tights in the winter as an extra layer under their jeans. Can't see the problem! Ds1 is 5 this year so not sure how keen he'll be but if its as cold as last year he's not getting a choice! They've got black / navy tights for girls in Asda/Tesco/Mothercare/John Lewis so I just buy those.

mablitz · 01/11/2010 20:30

My DS wore tights in the winter when he was a toddler, he's 12 now. He loves thermal vests in the winter, they look a bit like a T-shirt, but the other day he came home from school without it on, apparently somebody noticed it under his polo shirt and he was teased for wearing a vest! I'm going to cut a V neck in it now, I told him if they want to make fun of his underwear do they want to see what he has on underneath :o I would rather him be warm than worry about other peoples opinions.

LightlyKilledCrunchyFrog · 01/11/2010 20:31

My boys have always worn tights. I also got these for DS2 on warmer days, stay on better than socks.

PavlovtheWitchesCat · 01/11/2010 20:35

oh i love those! DH and I were talking about shoes/socks like this just the other day when we were going to the beach as DS is crawling/cruising but not quite walking so not really good for shoes yet, and needs grip on grass, sand etc.

FAB I am getting some of those!

My DS wore tights as a toddler, got them in Lidl. Boys tights are also available in H&M, blue ones with bear or dog and trucks boys stuff etc! They were especially handy when we went to Disney land Paris and it was very cold there. Have cute pics of him wearing them. Smile

Chatelaine · 01/11/2010 20:39

Very sensible for toddlers, think of them as leggings rather than tights Smile

preghead · 01/11/2010 20:52

All my 3 boys wear them, even the 5 y old wore last winter skiing and bonfire night. I grew up in Europe and my brother wore them then when little 20 plus years ago. It is normal in Europe. I recently got some nice ones from h and m and pumpkin patch for my newborn in non pink colours. Pumpkin patch have some nice black and grey stripy ones. In h and m you normally have to look in the girl section with the frilly socks but they have white, navy etc. My newborn had the White ones on today, looked so cute on his skinny little chicken legs!

Dont get me started in the whole pink gender bullshit, it drives me insane. I always cite the abomination that is the pink "girl" globe in ELC as evidence of how wrong it all is.

anonymosity · 01/11/2010 20:54

I put navy tights on my son (under his trousers) last winter and the winter before because it was so cold. Now that he's started preschool I don't (mainly because my mother told me I had to stop at this age).

methsdrinker · 01/11/2010 21:36

If you go on any building site in the winter and have a rummage you will find lots of rufty tufty hard hatted men types wear tights.
It keeps them warm. Probaly doesn't do much for their sperm count but at least the little darlings are warm.

Maybe at 11 months he is to young to climb scafolding and juggle spanners and so won't look manly enough for the warm office sit at your desk types, but for any proper worker tights are a god send.
