to want a better quality of trick or treaters?

Disappointing lack of trick and treaters. I quite often leave my front door open (I like a breeze and the frisson of providing a welcome invitation to burglars) so about half an hour ago there was a knock on the open door. Three little boys standing there. Silent. For a while. So I had to say: Trick or Treat? To which they replied yes. I then had to explain that (a) they were supposed to say that, not me; (b) yes wasn't really a helpful answer because now I wasn't sure where we were in the accepted pattern of the trick or treat transaction, or even who was tricking or treating who; and (c) they had no costumes on. There was then a mass of confused whispering at which point they had to step back from the door to confer until one of them explained they didn't realise they had to have costumes. Kids today. I ask you. Second lot of SEVEN ToTers had one child in a spiderman outfit between all of them.

WTF? I'm all up for handing out treats but AIBU to expect those wanting treats to be entering into the spirit of Halloween and actually dress up. Otherwise is it not all just demanding sweets with vague threats of egging your house.

So do I turn bad and refuse treats to no costumes and risk eating the Quality Street myself or is this just plain mean?

Yeah, it's rubbish when they don't bother to dress up, or at the very least stick a mask on, and I am always surprised parents don't make their kids dress up before they're allowed to go out and 'demand' sweets from strangers. I wouldn't blame you if you did turn away those without costumes, but then you've always got the possibility of having your house egged or your car keyed! So if it was me I'd probably play safe and give them the sweets. Mind you, this year, because we've had so few trick or treaters during the previous years we haven't bothered getting any sweets in, so if anyone does knock this year we're just ignoring it anyway!

YANBU - my dcs 6 and 9 love trick or treat but they made up a little poem to say when people answer the door which our neighbours thought was really nice!

I too expect an effort.

oh a poem would definitely be worth a good few QS - I would be handing out green triangles for that! (highly sought after in this house, second only to the purple one)

Car is safely far away Sims2fan but I hear you!

Oh you can have ours, we have had about 8 groups of TTers tonight, I cant even go to the loo. I have ran out of sweets, so put a sign on the door saying so.
