Over the past few months with the election and wotnot I have seen the following on MN and it aint pretty.

I have learned that

...even if you work there will be some smug cow telling you that you should work longer/harder rather than claim tax credits.

... anyone having more than one child and living on benefits is beneath contempt (despite the people in question pointing out that they had their children before redundancy etc)

...caring for a disabled child should not need DLA - after all you are just caring for your child innit. Hmm

...that the Labour Govt made it too easy for people to live off the rest of us what pay taxes.

..that in good times you should save save save so you don't need to claim what you are entitled to. (Conveniently ignoring the fact that many work for a minimum wage).

All the above and more has been seen recently on MN - it's not pretty and paints a really nasty picture of MN.

I have to say I have seen the other side of the coin too - people who have gone out of their way to support others and I know the opinions above are a minority. However, they are becoming a sizeable minority and it's horrible. Please think about the effect of what you are saying before posting - some people live in an ivory tower and conveniently forget they are just one redundancy away from joining those they condemn.

OP posts:
Tortington · 31/10/2010 16:59

i only know two posters who hold those views.

i find most of mumsnet so MC liberal its sickening

Joolyjoolyjoo · 31/10/2010 17:00

I think the fact that you yourself have pointed out that those are minority opinions shows that they don't apply to most people on MN [hsmile]

Doodlez · 31/10/2010 17:01

Not the sum total of my experience of MN - think you must have been posting in some topic I've hidden HmmConfused

YABU

LaurieScaryCake · 31/10/2010 17:01

Hardly anyone thinks that, it's a very minority view. People really stand out when they hold such weird opinions.

In my opinion mumsnet is a bit like the Les Dawson sketch - all hoisting of norks and secretly judgy Grin

usualsuspect · 31/10/2010 17:02

Quite a vocal minority though

MumBarTheDoorZombiesAreComing · 31/10/2010 17:02

Really?? I'm shocked. I am a single mum, 1DS, work 30hrs a week term time only, doing a degree that gets paid for by govt, get minimal HB, CTC, WTC to top up my wages, live in HA flat. Blush

People must really think a little of me then if thats what they believe.

No-ones said it too my face tho .

FindingMymOOOOOOOOjo · 31/10/2010 17:04

you get all sorts here - some you've just got to roll your 'eyes' at. There's lots more to offer on MN - depends what you want to focus on.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 31/10/2010 17:06

I don't know anyone who thinks you shouldn't get extra benefits to care for a disabled child.

And to an extent I agree with the rest, that the welfare state is a worthy crutch for people that need it and not an assumed way to make ones living. Most people assure, to the best of their abilities, that they can give their dcs basic needs themselves when shit happens they could be more money for people who fall on hard times?

edam · 31/10/2010 17:12

OP has a point. One of the really depressing things about this new government is that all the spiteful, jealous, petty people feel they've been given permission to parade their obnoxious views all over the place.

Even racists know racism is generally not treated kindly, so they tend to moderate the expression of those views in public, or save them for gatherings of like-minded souls. But those who are prejudiced on grounds of class are currently celebrating their small-mindedness everywhere they can find.

V. good point about the smug gits only being a few wage packets away from poverty themselves, too. Anyone can be hit by disaster that dramatically affects their circumstances. Stupid people forget that and enjoy sticking the boot in.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 31/10/2010 17:15

Do I get a different MN to you OP?

Of course you get the odd person marching through cyberdom spouting rubbish about nonsense, but I'm afraid they're not things you 'learn on MN', they're 'things twonks say'.

spikeycow · 31/10/2010 17:30

I'm sick of the holier than thou shit on here aswell. There are whole threads of one poor sod being jumped on to varying degrees, people just join in because everyone else is doing it.

byrel · 31/10/2010 17:32

YABU I've found that on MN there are a lot of lively discussions which include people with a wide range of political views from marxists to complete free-marketeers.

spikeycow · 31/10/2010 17:35

And it isn't just since the election either.

huddspur · 31/10/2010 17:37

I spend a lot of times on the politics/in the news/AIBU boards and I don't really recognise the picture you describe. People just offer their opinions

YABU... You've found the vocal minority but they can always be identified when they post a link to or make reference to their Holy Book of Phlegm... the Daily Mail. (Although... psst... it actually is a good idea to save money when you've got some spare. You never know what's around the corner)

Janos · 31/10/2010 18:04

YANBU to have noticed that people hold those opinions, but YADBU to take them remotely seriously!

Most people on MN are lovely, FACT.

spikeycow · 31/10/2010 18:10

Also there's the thing where new or less well known posters get flamed where popular posters don't. They might get the odd comment but not piled on by thread loads of people.

spikeycow · 31/10/2010 18:12

And it's not just a minority who differentiate between deserving and undeserving poor. There's lots of "Oh I couldn't possibly mean you popular darling". That's just yuck

Miggsie · 31/10/2010 18:13

In my life I have discovered that not everyone shares my views and some people are stupid and some people are horrible. Some are a mix of those and some of them post on mumsnet. However far worse and nastier people post on other forums so I stick with mumsnet and sometimes when I see a comment from a particular poster I think "I am so glad I don't know you in real life".

I'd rather be on mumsnet than in a pub full of Millwall supporters.

sungirltan · 31/10/2010 18:15

has mn cut a sponsorship deal with the daily mail?

yikes.

i think the majority of mner are more liberal than that but i could name one very definite mner who holds those views. how they can maintain them with all the reading they puport to do beggars belief but hey ho.

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 31/10/2010 18:25

I have learnt that Pag has a flowery cunt.

newlurker · 31/10/2010 18:44

I don't read every post - but I have not noticed many expressing that kind of sentiment. There are a few - but it is a discussion board and conflict is reasonable on such a board.
I agree with all who say that such remarks are made by a vocal minority. Very much a minority.
Try not to let it upset you.

peasantgoneroundthebend4 · 31/10/2010 19:09

Yes there's some who are vocal on their views which could be considered dam right nasty but then I do admit I can be very vocal to when arguing on the flip side of their arguements .end of day I can mentally think 2 fingers to them and hit the of switch

what I have learnt on Mn isthat i shall not be speaking at the Xmas party due to my use of the amercian sayings that I use . I shall endeavour to keep quiet by the great sacfice if keep drinking

peasantgoneroundthebend4 · 31/10/2010 19:10

Of not if
