To hate this Americanism that has crept in to our language

"Go figure"

Does it wind anyone else up too - or is it just me?

OP posts:

(american here) I think I say 'go figure' from time to time, but honestly it's not until all useful responses have been exhausted. After someone has observed for the tenth time that the sky is indeed blue, "go figure" is a perfectly reasonable response.

"asshat" is, indeed, a good fun insult. I've honestly only actually heard it aloud once or twice, but I see (and use) it on the internet semi-frequently.

I hate eatery as well. It drives me up a wall. And I DETEST "I'm lovin' it". It's a fucking McDonald's slogan!

Whilst gets on my nerves too (will that annoy you?). It sounds like someone saying "while" got their lips caught in a mixer.

Pickledbabe

No, because it just sounds wrong!

I noticed that on advertisements which have dates it says, for example, 'In cinemas.. October 12th. Instead of October the 12th. Is shortening the date all about saving time/money on the adverts? Has anyone else noticed?

Monstermuncher · 30/10/2010 14:22

Awesome. Bad enough when kids say it but adults should know better, esp when they pronounce it "Osssome".

Asshat on the other hand is fab, not heard that before

B-b-but...but our version is superior SGM Shock

It's absolutely appalling that an insurance firm has chosen to name itself 'Gocompare' and inflicts this on all of us in its TV ads.
And, while I'm at it, there's 'Plumb Center'...

SleepingLion · 30/10/2010 14:27

Interestingly, Chambers has orient and orientate as interchangeable as far as I can see, with no indication that one is an Americanism. It has oriented, orientated followed by the same definition for both.

SleepingLion · 30/10/2010 14:28

and all the words that it lists come from the original root of orient, not orientate....

ScatterChasse · 30/10/2010 14:28

Exactly harvalp.

You can go somewhere and then compare something, but you can't do them both at one!

Ariesgirl · 30/10/2010 14:36

mamas I'm with you on the date thing (can I say "I'm with you"? Ought I say "I agree with you"?) In cinemas November 12th makes my blood boil - there's just no need. Even worse is "In cinemas November twelve". Shortly I expect they will be saying "In movie theatres".

I agree with the poster who mentioned the Bill Bryson book Mother Tongue. It's extremely interesting, even though it's a bit out of date now.

TiggyD · 30/10/2010 14:44

If the English language has an advantage over others it's probably flexibility and the fact that it is allowed to change over time. Who here talks like a character from Jane Austin, Shakespeare or Chaucer?

pickledbabe · 30/10/2010 15:38

it should be 12th Octboer, anyway, which is the written form of The 12th of October.
The American way is with the month then the date, and the British way is the date of the month.

Oh. My. God.

I was just about to start exactly the same post!
I assume we both read the same thread that contained it.

I hate it, and don't understand its meaning.
