...... "No trick or treaters please - my toddler is getting frightened"

Some earlies came the other night, not even older kids, but they had masks on, and 18m old DD pottered to the door with me and was alarmed. Happened again the other night, again not older kids, about 8yrs old, masks again and she started crying hysterically and now gets upset when the door goes (even if its the postman).

I feel a bit bad that she is finding this alarming! She isn't bothered by masks etc in the supermarket, just when they appear at her door.

AIBU, or a PFB? [hbiscuit]?

Off topic - how horrific are some of the masks on sale this year?

DH wants to put out an empty basket with a sign saying 'please help yourselves' while he sits inside and scoffs all the Haribos [hhmm]

onmyfeet · 29/10/2010 14:37

It is unreasonable for them to be trick or treating when it is not even Halloween!

I don't even have any treats bought yet, so they would not score here!
I think putting out some sweets with the sign is the best idea.

Just for the ones who hate Trick or Treat [hgrin]

It worked for us a couple of years back. Maybe tho write "2 yr old IS terrified" ( or what ever age) rather than "toddler is getting". Make it obvious to kids who are not that great at reading and understanding .

My friend four years ago had a 10 day old newborn in the house for the first time alone (her DH on night shift) and put a really nice note on the door asking that they please dont knock because of newborn

Their house and car were completely egged Sad

what happened to opting in or out??

I used to put a sign on door saying "Please do not knock on my door before 6pm as I ahve mindees aged under 4 who are terrified"

It worked, except for one woman who cmae round at 5pm with her 3 year old and she said "well x won't be out later". I replied "sorry, but as you can see the 3 toddlers are screaming so I'll leave you to it"

hornedtoadjennyp · 29/10/2010 20:57

Here in the States, if you have your porch light off and no decorations (at the minimum pumpkins) nobody knocks and I've not heard of anyone being egged. On our estate it's mostly little ones going round with their parents in not scary costumes (mine are going to be a ladybird fairy and spiderman) and the adults get dressed up and make it fun for them. It's much better than I remember it being back home.

AnathemaDevice · 29/10/2010 22:08

I want to put a sign on our door saying 'No trick or treaters- toddler sleeping', but I get the feeling it'll lead to us getting egged- we don't live in the nicest of areas.

I get the feeling I'm going to spend the evening sitting with the lights off, hoping trick or treaters will think we're out.

hornedtoadjennyp.

Here in West London, it's more American Halloween crossed with Devils Night, I've never had anyone knock on my door asking for sweats we just get the windows egged, everything gets egged, it's a night you stay in doors, cars buses, pedestrians everything gets egged, and gangs of muggers take the opportunity to hang around threatening people, robbing or mugging them on the one day of the year the law turns a blind eye to them walking around in hoodies and masks carrying brooms and other things they can hit people with.

Oh and as it's getting near to bonfire night they have access to fireworks as well, they tend to like firing rockets up roads here and sticking them in letter boxes.

but then this place isn't exactly a shinning beacon of neighburly bliss even at the best of times.

A few years ago, my husband was on nights for Hallowe'en week, so I put a notice on the front door

"No trick or treat please - 10 week old is asleep" and heard not a peep.

I didn't have to tell anyone that the 10 week old in question was our new kitten - but he WAS always asleep at that time!!!

DanceOnTheDarkSide · 30/10/2010 15:08

Where can I get some of this god poo from? Grin

bensonbutnohedges · 30/10/2010 15:29

I have run off the notice from my local Police website. It has the contact number for antisocial behaviour on it as well.
I don't really "get" Halloween at all. Why is it a good thing to go round frightening people in their own homes so they will give your DCs sweets?

God poo PMSL Grin

SpookyNoise · 30/10/2010 16:31

They shouldn't be knocking until tomorrow, but I guess as tomorrow is a school night there will be some tonight. However, we are out at a party tonight. Hopefully the three barking dogs will put most of them off!

SpookyNoise · 30/10/2010 16:31

Although we are well stocked up for tomorrow night!!
