To not give out sweets at halloween?

What do people think about halloween themed stickers, pencils, rubbers, balloons etc instead?

And does anyone actually give money or fruit?

I am doing glow stick bracelets this year. I think the children will be thrilled to get something different, they know half their sweets are going to end up in the bin anyway.

mummycreepynora · 28/10/2010 21:21

my DD would LOVE to be given fruit!!!! Bloody loves the stuff - we nipped to the shop earlier for some bits and she was grabbing a snack bag of grapes and asking for them Of course she wouldn't say no to a mountain of chocolate and sugar either Grin

nappyaddict · 28/10/2010 21:24

Glow sticks are a good idea.

Have seen some glow in the dark crayons that I thought might be fun.

Yes but you are in the US Madam , here in the UK no-one would dream of doing such a thing.

Dansmommy · 28/10/2010 21:46

MDS...that's an urban myth.

Nobody opens the bloody doors around here the miserable old buggers.
Mine are delighted to get a packet of mini harobo and I for one enjoy eating it all seeing their little faces.

They want sweets ...

piscesmoon · 28/10/2010 22:12

'I'd strongly advise telling your children not to eat unwrapped sweets, homemade cakes and fruit. '

I only give out homemade treacle toffee or fudge. I am always waiting for a DC to say that they can't eat unwrapped sweets from a stranger so that I can say 'they why are you knocking on stranger's doors'! It is very nice toffee/fudge and I list the ingredients on the bag. I think it is extremely rude to knock on my door for sweets and then tell me that you don't trust me!! Why on earth do you let them go to strangers if you don't trust them? Weird!
(they don't want fruit-I have tried)

piscesmoon · 28/10/2010 22:14

'God knows where or cakes made by strangers who may have doubtful hygiene.

Unbelievable-go to people that you know!
I love the way that parents want control of everything. You knock on people's doors that you don't know and then you want to dictate what they give out!

Dansmommy · 28/10/2010 22:16

'...cakes made by strangers...'

And you know everyone who works in the factories that produce the wrapped sweets, do you? Hmm

Anyway, you're backtracking with the hygeine comment! Your first post mentioned razor blades in fruit!

PreciousLittle · 28/10/2010 22:20

Ooooo Pisces, I'll have some!! I'd let the kids eat it, too, if there was any left. But I'm reckless like that.

pintyblud · 28/10/2010 22:26

Some people give money, nothing wrong with that.

Monkey nuts can be popular.

Glow sticks would be good if you can get some really cheap ones.

They just want a sweetie though. Asweetie or 10p.

piscesmoon · 28/10/2010 22:28

It is perfectly nice. The DCs have actually been very appreciative-they like the fact it is homemade. I always tell them exactly what is in it and tell them that I have written it on the bag. If there is a parent with them I explain that it has a simple list of ingredients in case there are any allergies.

I can't get over the fact that people should knock on my door, but then think that I would produce sweets that I wouldn't eat myself! It is weird behaviour to get your DC to knock on doors one night a year when you don't know who lives there but then say she might be a horrible woman-don't eat her sweets! (don't knock on the door!)

bosch · 28/10/2010 22:32

We made the mistake of giving money one year (i had a pot with loads of coppers in) and the little blighters round here kept on coming back for more money! Never again.

TastesLikePanda · 28/10/2010 22:35

This year i've decided to give out bags of Monster Munch because it was on offer it's monster themed! Little children will be given the choice of flavours, big gallumping teens will be given 'Flaming Hot' flavour as a prank!

cakewench · 28/10/2010 22:36

Glad Dansmommy pointed out the myth re: razor blades in fruit.

When I was a kid, there was always one person spooning out pennies into our treat bags. It might seem like a nice idea, but all it really does is make the more loosely-wrapped items taste like copper. :( Especially if penny-spoon guy happens to live next door to candy corn-spoon lady. bleh.

kelly2525 · 29/10/2010 01:11

Im one of those miserable cowbags that doesnt answer the door, the reason being is the little darlings dont want sweets, crisps, bracelets, fruit etc, they want money, and they want money for saying in a flat/bored voice "the sky is blue, the grass is green, anything for halloween?"

The ones that put a bit of effort in to it are usually wearing a black bin bag

theywillgrowup · 29/10/2010 01:24

weve been given money before but bloody aggro dividing 50p by 8=10 kids,i know but we alawys go with same kids every year, bit daunting being the householder seeing 10 kids on your door

love the glowstick idea,it will be dark and different
