to be offended that, because I can string a sentence together and don't use txspk, people assume that I must be middle class?

There is nothing at all wrong with being middle class. It's a nice state of being.

But I get very upset when my friends, or posters her, say things like "Well, you are quite middle class, aren't you!"

I'm not. I'm quite intelligent, I'm quite well read, I'm quite moral and I'm getting on for quite old, but I'm not at ALL middle class.

It's as if to be working class (which I consider myself to be) you have to be ignorant and a bit dim, thoroughly uninterested in the world beyond the TV and actually, that's insulting. Some working class people are ignorant and a bit thick, but the same could be said for any class of people. Look at the Duke Of Edinborough!

I can be working class and quite bright, I can be working class and quite well read, I can be working class and able to vocally assert myself without cursing. Working class is not synonymous with "incapable of functioning properly outside of a greasy caff"

No and it is pointless getting bogged down in it. Essentially all I was talking about it how middle class parents are more likely to teach their children certain behaviours and take them to the museum, read to them etc etc which impacts upon their education, usually enabling them to achieve more than their wc counterparts.

Mamumu · 29/10/2010 20:11

Oh please, what does txspk stand for?

MoralDefective · 29/10/2010 20:20

Colditz....
Duke of EdinburghHmm

usualsuspect · 29/10/2010 20:25

My WC kids have never been too a museum ..we prefer the working mens club and weatherspoons

Gay40 · 29/10/2010 20:33

People assume I'm middle class all the time and it grates on my nerves. I'm very happy to correct them.

Mamumu · 29/10/2010 20:41

Oh please, I am very curious, what is txspk? I am not English, so I don't get it :-(

Also, what makes one middle class in your opinion?

Mumcentreplus · 29/10/2010 20:41

Grin@ usual...and don't forget Wimpy!

catholicatheist · 29/10/2010 20:50

usualsuspect and mumscentreplus... before you start getting facetious read my previous posts.I am from a WC background myself my father was a factor worker and I grew up in a council house. I am trying to argue for working class people not against them.

usualsuspect · 29/10/2010 21:04

catholicatheist I'm sorry Blush heard it all before on MN what does facetious mean? I'm joking Wink

Mumcentreplus · 29/10/2010 21:15

usualsuspect · 29/10/2010 21:16

I find the WC have a better sense of humour ..thats how I can tell

Mumcentreplus · 29/10/2010 21:19

Grin...you know that will proabably upset her right?...you are questioning her working class roots..

echt · 29/10/2010 21:29

Hello, colditz. I've just woken up. Thanks for responding to my query of, well, quite a few pages back.

I agree, it must be irritating. I grew up in a clever, bookish working-class family, and didn't get the slightly odd perceptions of working class people until I went to university. An example was once I mentioned my dad had said he'd "play Hamlet if XX happened", i.e. go mad. The other person said: "Does he know who Hamlet is?".

At the time I laughed, and said of course, and it wasn't until much later that I thought what a limited world view he had. Only one person, of course.

YANBU. :o

Propinquity · 29/10/2010 21:30

There's no such thing as Class. There's only Aristocrats and the Rest Of Us.

Anything in between is snobbery (snob is latin for 'sine nobilitate' or pretend aristocrat).

Like everything in life, Class is just a useful Product revenue generator.

It's harking back to the feudal system from British medieval history, isn't it? That we need to categorise ourselves, 'know our limits' and thus stay within our own self-styled parameters in life. Keeps the mob under control.

Stop promoting prejudice by believing in this class system. You couldn't tell if the master huntsman was working class anymore than the head houndkeeper was the son of a viscount, so it's pointless, banal and well, a waste of time really. Particulalry as there are so many idiosyncracies Wink

Mumcentreplus · 29/10/2010 21:37

As I said class is about elevation...tis a waste

Propinquity · 29/10/2010 21:37

OK I had to just google because I was unsure about the definition latin's jaded and very rusty - sine nobilitate is shortened to s.nob hence 'snob'.

I kind of like the idea of the silent S Wink
sums it all up really.

Edgar, have I offended you in some way?

I'm a little confused as to why my views on circumcision are relevant to this thread, that's all.

EvilAllenPoe · 30/10/2010 12:02

oh, i see i am being trolled.

edgarallinpink21 is not me!

CakeandRoses · 30/10/2010 12:51

colditz are you upset with your friends or is it 'society' for creating this stereotype that your friends are misjudging you by?

And are said friends WC too? And are they intelligent?

I know people of all classes, nearly all intelligent and I can't believe any of them would agree with this intelligent=MC thing.

xenia Look! I'm starting sentences with an 'and' despite being MC Shock

mamumu 'txtspk' is an abbreviation for the short-hand language that has evolved out of texting on mobile phones, for example m8 for mate, or 2U for 'to you'.

Hence 'txtspk' for text speak.
