4 year old DD has been watching this now for a few weeks.

He has been vile lately lots of nah nah nah nah!!! I never realised children actually ever did this. Every thing is stupid, she hates everything and anything i say is soooo unfair. she has also been a bit nasty to her friends and thinks she is better than everyone else and everything is babieish!!!

I havent ever watched it with her, it is normaly on when im doing dinner. But we were out for lunch today so I did not have to cook tonight so sat and watched it with her and thought her behaviour was a lot like horrid henrys in every way. Think I may have to limit her viewing.

I can't stand Horrid Henry!

My boys got into it from the books though, and when I tried to ban them after them continually calling eachother 'worm', the oldest one started bringing them home from school!

I even mentioned it to his teacher, who told me she reads them in class Hmm and that she was happy as long as it encouraged them to read1

YANBU Angry

My 6 year old hasn't discovered HH yet (I'm hoping she'll skip it).
But I do remember when she was little how cool she thought Nemo was in that scene where his dad's saying "do not touch that boat.........if you put one fin on that boat......" - and Nemo slaps the boat, defiantly staring at his dad. I think that scene was to blame for some naughtiness back then.

DD learned to read pretty early. She started to bring home HH from school and her behaviour (never good to start with) became horrid. It got to the stage where I asked the librarian to make sure she didn't bring any books home. I asked her class teacher to stop her reading them at school and we had a serious conversation about why he was called HORRID Henry.
She is not allowed to watch Beacker either. My DD is clearly very impressionable.

overmydeadbody · 29/10/2010 08:44

I don't like Horrid Henry. His parnts really wind me up, they are useless.

thisiswhataluv · 29/10/2010 08:44

my 3dcs LOVE horrid henry, infact its on right now !

Francagoestohollywood · 29/10/2010 08:53

YABU. So, when they are of their best behaviour, is it because they are influenced by Charlie (from charlie and lola)???

tittybangbang · 29/10/2010 09:11

Problem with HH is that there are NO redeeming characters. None. Henry's a brat, Peter's a goody goody little shit, the parents are nagging whingers.

My kids love it. And it reflects what they see in our household. Blush

valiumskeleton · 29/10/2010 09:24

I liked reading the stories, because from the Pov of an adult they are more entertaining than the average child's book, but I also stopped buying/borrowing these books!. My dc1 is horrible to dc2 as it is and I don't think these books were helping that situation.

she was YELLING at him to go away, calling him styooooopid. The Wimpy Kid isn't any better btw. 6 pages into one of those and before my brain could edit on the hoof the word 'jerk' was bandied about between the two brothers (who also hated each other).

HappyMummyOfOne · 29/10/2010 09:36

I hate the show and wont let DS watch it or read the books. Dont like the "horrid child" bit or the naughtiness.

PhishFoodAddiction · 29/10/2010 09:48

Argh HH was on all day the other weekend- when I went to my dad's my younger sister was watching it.So irritating. My DD1 says she loves it- but she will never get to watch it here as I pretend we can only get the cbeebies channel Grin.

MilaMae · 29/10/2010 10:02

My 3 love Horrid Henry and Wimpy Kid,I have 3 avid readers of which I have along with many other books both HH and WK to thank for.

I'm guessing you'll be banning Naughty Amelia Jane,My Naughty Little Sister etc too. How sad, kids love a naughty character and many fantastic books have them in. Also if you've read as many HH books as I have you'll know he does sometimes get his come upance, there is often a moral and sometimes he is wronged against eg HH Goes to Work-Bill deserved all he got imvho.

I let my 3 read whatever they choose to read as I don't want them to live in some pasteurized, fake world where siblings love each other at all times and never do anything bad.

I'm a strong parent with strong parenting skills so have no fear of harmless children's literature. My kids know right from wrong and that it's just fiction.

Yes they went through a stage of calling each other 'worm' and their teddies 'Mr Kill' in play but that's where it stayed. We did have one tortuous 3 day journey through the South of France listening to the bottom song continuously being sung but Miranda Richardson's fantastic reading of HH on CD more than compensated for it. Had us all in stitches.

As Franca says are your dc soooo influenced by literature that they turn into angels after reading books featuring 'angelic' characters?I know mine aren't.

tittybangbang · 29/10/2010 10:32

MilaMae - the only time I felt like banning HH was when my youngest started calling my FIL a 'stupid nappy baby'. It wouldn't have been so mortifying if FIL wasn't incontinent and in pads following a stroke. Shock

Also fond of Naughty Amelia Jane and My Naughty Little Sister. Loved these books myself as a child.

onceamai · 29/10/2010 10:37

If only mine were small enough to drag away from the computer to watch an hour of telly with their dps.Grin

melpomene · 29/10/2010 10:46

I've only read a few HH stories and have never seen the TV series, but from what I've seen he's in a different league from Naughty Little Sister. Henry seems to be spiteful and malicious, and is old enough to know better, whereas NLS is a fairly typical impulsive 3 year old (or is she 4?).

Does HH even have any friends? In the stories which I've seen he is derogatory about everyone he encounters, whereas by contrast NLS has plenty of friends and gets on well with neighbours, shopkeepers etc as well as being friends with other children.

NLS makes me feel warmly nostalgic; HH just makes me feel prickly and irritated.

allhallowsandwine · 29/10/2010 12:25

I would def say yes my dd is influenced by calmer and nicer characters from stories and tv, This thread was started in some humour but with a serious side to it just to see if others detested the little bugger as much as I do. I wont be banning HH but will def limit viewing and not get into the books. I Dont naughty amelia jane.

i dont for one min doubt my strenghth of parenting skills as a result of external inluences upon my child. [hgrin]
