to want my mother to text me in plain English, rather than text speak?

It takes me ages to work out what my mum is trying to say in her text messages. When i eventually work it out, it is usually not something that would take up a full message, so why?
AIBU to ask her to talk properly?!?

Disclaimer - as a teacher, I spend forever telling children not to do it!

I am a weirdo that punctuates text messages so I agree with you!

CerealOffender · 28/10/2010 15:20

yes, i find text speak texts a lot like those optical illusions that used to be really popular. i have to stare at it for ages to work out what it means

olivo · 28/10/2010 15:21

OOps, that makes me a weirdo too! [hgrin]
I can't be doing without punctuation.

I hate text speak, I even find the acronyms on here difficult, I'd tell her to text in proper english or she wouldn't get a reply because I don't know what she's saying

DuelingFanjo · 28/10/2010 15:24

If my mum did this I would text back 'what?'

olivo · 28/10/2010 15:31

I have replied "I haven't a clue what you are on about" several times, but she hasn't taken the hint.[hhmm]

MIL is the same - she thinks she is v cool -but tbh the messages are v hard to decipher... she doesn't understand predictive text however many times we try to explain it so we are doomed to years of this nonsense...

psammyad · 28/10/2010 15:32

My mum does this, I think because
a) she can't help thinking she's being charged by the word, like a telegram.
& b)her spelling is atrocious so predictive text is frustrating to use.

I find it very bizarre though, and text her back in normal English.

cupcakesandbunting · 28/10/2010 15:32

My mother does this too. It's so annoying.

Even more annoying, she sometimes texts in her broad Black Country dialect, which is shocking. It's bad enough listening to it. You'd think you'd be safe from it in a text Hmm

TheEvilDead2 · 28/10/2010 15:36

Not cool when mums do this

olivo · 28/10/2010 15:37

pmsl at a world of mothers who think they are cool/cost-cutting but not quite hitting the mark [hgrin]

Oh, bless her. My auntie does this too. I bet they're very proud of themselves that they've mastered text messages and are Down With the Kids.

A text message should aspire to be a miniature literary gem. As all mine are, hem hem.

Lotofdamnationandhellfire · 28/10/2010 15:54

I've got a teenage niece and I find she gives me so much current info on the current lingo its fantastic. I really wouldn't use it just makes it easier to understand her and others but at the end of every text message she always puts one of those sideways faces with boobs. I've never worked out how to do them.:'0 and :$).

Minione · 28/10/2010 15:55

My mum does this! DH thinks it is hilarious. She doesn't seem to 'get' predictive text but in every other context is a stickler for grammar and spellings.

I'm an English teacher so my texts are like essays, much to the amusement of friends.
