Am a big fan of not gender stereotyping children, but I really don't want him to have a barbie.

It's not so much the doll-ness, more the barbie-ness that I object to...

bekkio - well done to your DS. He's a bright boy!

My BIL had a real strop on when SIL bought a toy baby buggy for their DS, saying he would "end up gay"

I pointed out that in fact a gay man was the least likely to end up pushing a buggy around as he would be unlikely to have kids.

He didn't have an answer to that.

Buy him Barbie, Buzz Lightyear AND Action Man, and you have HOURS of play!

What about Snowboarding Barbie?

She wears trainers!

SirBoobAlot · 29/10/2010 12:24

Get him a doll if he wants one, but not a Barbie..

MaMoTTaT · 29/10/2010 12:26

oh buy it for him.

I always wanted a Barbie - and only ever got sodding Sindy doll's

DancingHippoOnAcid · 29/10/2010 12:30

SirBoobALot, why not just get the kid what he wants? Barbie's are not the work of the devil, you know.

SirBoobAlot · 29/10/2010 12:35

I don't like the image they portray of women. They're sexist and great for drilling into children from a young age that women should be thin, tall, blonde and big boobed.

And they're over priced and tacky.

MaMoTTaT · 29/10/2010 12:39

she's not that big boobed these days is she?

When I wanted one when I was younger I remember the boobs being HUGE.

DancingHippoOnAcid · 29/10/2010 12:51

SirBoobALot, do you really think kids are dumb enough to think real women look like Barbie?

As I have said before, I am sure kids have noticed that real women are not six inches tall and made of plastic [hhmm]

I wanted Barbie many, many years ago but was not allowed as she was too expensive.
So my daughter had many Barbie's and a sodding Barbie house that caused one Christmas Eve to be really stressful.

Having given much thought to feminism etc we have decided we aren't so struck on Barbie and though DGD has some she's not that bothered.

She loves 'Ruby Ruby Girls' ie Groovy Girls and we've bought her quite a few and some of the accessories for up-coming Birthday and Christmas. this is Connor

I don't know if DS would like them or is the Glamour of Barbie that appeals?
Talk to him about it and why you are wondering if he will like playing with that particular doll.

Gory09 · 29/10/2010 17:54

SirBoobAlot, I played with Barbie dolls when I was little and, I am neither thin nor blond. She really was not a role model , just a toy I enjoyed really.
