You've got my sympathy. I've got an app next Tues for a nagging ache that isn't going away and I'm petrified about how much it's going to cost (is a front tooth, so can't really get a rotten old grey filling for example, or have it pulled !).

NHS treatment may be cheaper but it's not cheap.

witchycatsmother · 27/10/2010 20:11

That's interesting Herbie .... I'm pretty certain that last time I had a filling I was charged a lot more than that. Am beginning to think that I was charged private rates (though am an NHS patient) ?!? ....... will certainly be looking at my bill more closely this time though. Band B is a pain, but Band 3 is just sickening.

OutOutLetItAllOut · 27/10/2010 20:13

well i have to have root canal...so it looks like just shrot of 50 quid.
not as bad as i thought...
lets hope they have to stick to those prices and cant change them.

Oh god I'm in the same boat - last niggle cost me over 600 (euro) and this time it's my front tooth more terrified at the thought of the charge than the actual dentist adn that's saying something!

No NHS here worst luck!!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 27/10/2010 20:56

I escaped from my NHS dentist who buggered up my first root canal. it took me a while to realise I have to look after my teeth and that may explain the lack of pressies for DH at Christmas!

activate · 27/10/2010 21:05

you better double check your dentist will do a root canal on nhs first s/he might be pulling a fast on like ours did who then proceeded to say that they'd only pull the tooth on the nhs due to budgets

KT1324 · 27/10/2010 21:22

I'm having dental surgery on my front tooth (implant) have already paid £1500 and have got another £1000 to go.. so in total going to be £2500 for 1 tooth.. lots of people think I am MAD but I think 36 too young to have a false tooth on a plate that I have to take out every night so I am getting it done. Op is a week tom. :-( really scared

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 27/10/2010 21:24

Anyone who can FIND an NHS dentist is lucky!! I pay £87 for a check up and scale and polish. I had a filling for a cracked too last vist and the toal bill was just short of £200.

BeccaandEvie · 27/10/2010 22:29

I had a filling and a clean last week and it cost £149 (private). My check up and xrays cost £75. DD's checkup cost £26. I could cry

I have looked. for an NHS dentist since I moved 8 years ago, never found one yet.

thehat · 27/10/2010 23:55

I'm with an NHS dentist and my six year old DD might need a brace. They have warned me it could cost upward of £2,000!

DancingHippoOnAcid · 28/10/2010 00:14

thehat, that seems excessive. My DH recently finished extensive teeth straightening involving some extractions, braces etc over about 3 years and the whole lot cost less than £300 on the NHS.

Should be cheaper for DCs.

Casmama · 28/10/2010 00:22

OP phone your dentist tomorrow and ask how much it is going to be. My dh hadn't been to the dentist for years and had at least one broken tooth which needed extracted and two fillings that needed replaced. The work (and a scale and polish) was done over two appointments and I'm sure it was only about £160.
Check the price beforehand and double check that you are being charged NHS prices - you wouldn't let someone start repairing your csr without giving you a quote so why let them loose on your teeth?

Casmama · 28/10/2010 00:24

Just to add, most dentists will do NHS and private work - eg I get an NHS check up but if I need a filling I get a white one done and pay the private price - £55 compared to about £20 for a metal one on the NHS.

windowsandwalls · 28/10/2010 00:34

KT1234, what are you having, implant? I have had lots of surgery, mainly for infection and have always been fine, just nerve wracking beforehand, but in my case mainly because of being scared they will say they can't save my teeth or something. Good luck anyway.

mice · 28/10/2010 00:51

I have just had to have a root filling refilled due to there being a 4th root that wasn't discovered 6 years ago...
It is specialist work apparantly that has to be done by an endodontist - cost me just under £1000, that was the most painful bit!

theoldtrout01876 · 28/10/2010 01:39

My root canal was $2700 and the crown they have to put on after the root canal is going to cosy $1300 or there abouts, wish I had NHS dentistEnvy
