just had a phone call from an "international" call to say that our windows computer has picked up a virus, and for only £65 they can come out and fix it.

I asked several times if he was sure it was the windows computer that was affected and he confirmed this.

At the point that he asked me for my bank details so I could pay him the £65 I told him that not only do we not have a windows computer (we don't) but that we also haven't downloaded any viruses and I think he's scamming us and not to ring again.

I hung up.

He only went and bloody well rang back... "I think we got disconnected just as I was about to accept your payment"

anyway, beware of random strangers ringing you up to tell you your puter's fucked, it probably isn't

Haha I'd like to see him explain that one to a Mac only household

My mum's had this a few times. She says give me your number and I'll call you back once I've switched comp on. They soon hangup.

lollipopshoes · 26/10/2010 20:18

well, I've been MNing all day Blush so I'm fairly sure I would have noticed a problem.

Well, a problem that mattered anyway (ie MN going down!)

I've had this too, the most recent was yesterday. I told him I knew it was a scam and hung up but then wished I'd kept him talking to see if I could get any details to pass on to Trading Standards. A pensioner in the area fell for this recently and parted with some money - the scum who do this make me seethe!

TechLovingDad · 26/10/2010 20:20

Any conversation where someone asks for bank details is clearly dodgy, whatever the subject.

spleenvent · 26/10/2010 20:22

Is there anyone thick enough to fall for this kind of thing? Anyone?

Gillybean2010 · 26/10/2010 20:35

God, that's awful. DH told me that he'd heard of another one doing the rounds. Apparently, you get a phone call from 'BT' saying that your way overdue on your payments and if you don't pay right there and then, they'll cut you off.

If you ask them to prove their from BT, they say hold on whilst I disconnect your line just now, your phone will not work for 5 mins. In reality, all their doing is muting their phone, so you can't hear anything, but if you hang up your phone and try to dial out, it won't work as the line is already being used! They then 're-connect' you (put mute off at their end) and take a payment from you there and then. A few older folk have been done this way. Angry Sad

I think that the authorities need to start fining the card handlers. Surely they can trace who the money's going to? After all, these scammers are committing a crime.

Ive had the International call too recently re my Computer having problems. The last time they called I gave the phone to my 3 yr old who started to have a conversation with them and then I hung up!! They haven't called back since.

Don't believe Trading Standards could do much could they if they're phoning from India?
