Thanks to MN, especially dittany, Lenin, BoF and Anyfucker, I have been made aware of my casual attitude to misogyny. This short journey in my reclaiming my old values recently lead me to the London Feminist Network Conference on Saturday. And Oh my God it is one of the most inspirational things I've ever done.

Having money and being relatively attractive in my younger days I was mislead into thinking that being a feminist was irrelevant, after all we had a female PM and then 'girl power' where we were fooled into thinking with the right body shape and a little wit the world was our oyster (farm).

My husband's and friends' response to my recent activities have ranged from being mystified to mockery, from resentment to full on stereotypical prejudice. I am alarmed that barely any of my friends think feminism is relevant.

Am I being unreasonable to reclaim the word feminist to mean a person that wants to rid the world of gender prejudiced?

feminism can be a mighty force for agitation and positive change.i just dont accept the notion it cant be poked or challenged and it isnt anti feminist to do so

i also dont concur with a homogenity of women.it is deeper more complex.anything involving humans is

women share genetics, physiology not necessarily personality or attitudinal or behavioural determinants

as evident by multi-faceted societies and myriad of opinions not all gender specific

any sahm/work thread will reveal a fierce range of opinions, being female doesnt=commonalities

Women also share a history of expected subservience, dependence on men and punishment if opposed to it.

SM I don't think you have a point of view as such (the "it's complicated" argument is a bit on the mystical side), but revel in being reactionary. That's why you only pick and choose what you answer to.

scottishmummy · 27/10/2010 22:51

its the sweeping universal generalisations i contend.someone said that we live a life in fear, and if one states i dont they are somehow denying a sacrosanct given

HerBeatitude · 27/10/2010 22:52

Yes I don't take SM seriously at all. I don't know if anyone does tbh, she's just a bit of an irritant, like footlong or mad dave or whatever he was called.

I still let myself be drawn in occasionally though...
