Adding FiL to car insurance......AIBU

I probably am BU, but this has really really bugged me this morning.

My pil are coming up Fri-Mon and as we live in a fairly small village miles from anywhere and we are at work/nursery all day Fri and Mon, they requested that we insure one of our cars for them (they are coming at these times due to cheapness of flights and I work from home so car is free between nursery runs).

We were absolutely fine with this, and I called insurers to set it up, during the call to the insurers they asked questions about whether my fil had any convictions or claims recently - I assumed no, sigh stupid stupid me

Dh called pil to confirm we'd added fil to insurance but it turns out that he has had 2 claims in past 3 years..... now is it just me or wouldn't you think to mention this in the first place when you made a specific request that you be put on someone elses insurance. it is just me isn't it grrrrrr

I know that IAprobablyBU but I called insurance company back just now and got a really hard time for trying to change the details and feel very stupid - apparently it is going to be a Big Hassle for them to change these details, am now waiting for fil to come up with full details of claims.....

So what do you think.... AIBU?

Very Annoying! I hate ringing car insurers as it is...

nbyet · 25/10/2010 12:21

I think YABU to be 'really really' bugged by it. It's just one of those silly things. I'm sure he just didn't think of it.

chitchat09 · 25/10/2010 12:23

Oh ignore the insurers and their 'big hassle', they're just trying to make you feel guilty. These things happen! But yes, your FIL SHOULD have told you, so YANBU to be mightily annoyed with him.

PomPotty · 25/10/2010 12:29

thanks all - was expecting rather harsher pull-yourself-together type responses Smile

Is your FIL not insured to drive any car? Most policies provide for the named driver to be insured to drive any other car with the driver's permission.

I agree tho that with 2 claims in 3 years that may be relevant as to whether his policy will be "sufficient" for driving your car.

funkychunkymunky · 25/10/2010 12:35

I insured FIL the past 2 years on my car so he could use it when visiting as they live in France. This year he was here when I renewed and he told me not to bother putting him on. I didn't bother and they are coming over this weekend. He has requested to use my car grrrrr I feel your pain. YANBU.

PomPotty · 25/10/2010 12:37

Will get dh to check that olderandwiser thank you! I know I am insured like this
Feel your pain too munky!

Even if he is insured to drive any other car it would only be as third party, so you should take that into consideration as should he have an accident you or he would have to pick up the cost of repair or replacement for your car!

diddl · 25/10/2010 12:58

YANBU-tbh I´d tell my FIL to hire a car or use taxis rather than put them on the insuranceBlush

CMOTdibbler · 25/10/2010 14:14

the third part cover for driving other cars is only for emergencies, so should def not be used in this case

scurryfunge · 25/10/2010 14:18

Most policies these days do not allow any other driver 3rd party with permission.

It cost me £17 for FIL to be named on mine...well worth it.

onceamai · 25/10/2010 14:19

Don't see why the insurers are hassling over the paperwork - you're the customer - tell them you'll go elsewhere next time. Would have loved it if my FIL had agreed to drive my car when they used to come and stay. He could have done something useful while he was here.[hwink]

oldraver · 25/10/2010 14:51

When you phone back insurers if they make afuss about it being 'a hassle' just casually say "oh, too much hassle, I'll cancell then and go and findanother company that can deal with it"

Though I reckon these days they wouldn't be bothered

PomPotty · 25/10/2010 21:42

thanks again all - it's not the cost am concerned about - like scurry said, it's really a small amount, it's the hassle and the forgetting to mention claims.
Good tip oldraver - I'll try that one if they give me more hassle... honestly this morning the lady has me feeling like a naughty school girl Blush Angry
Fil has emailed details now so will call insurers back in the morning...

I would have asked him about any claims/conviction first.

But also think insurance company were just being a bit arsey!!

I wouldn't I had to change my insurance in order to take DS to school cost me £177 to cancel insurance as my old company wouldn't cover me.

PomPotty · 26/10/2010 13:24

Just a quick update - insurer call centre bod I spoke to this time was much more helpful - all she needed to do was fill the details in the "comments" box and there was no change to the charge, phew

Now I just have to await the in-law invasion this weekend, fun fun

It's a pain. We have a bit of a family car pool and tend to switch cars around according to whose is most suitable eg. bro has ridiculously impractical sports car so is often looking for large car for practical purposes eg. trip to IKEA.

On the other hand the sports car is useful for having fun with on child free weekends.....

As a result everyone is insured on several vehicles. I find it really complicated remembering all the insurance details/ date of obtaining licence/ nature of claims /convictions that I have a spreadsheet!
