Nick Clegg on Desert Island Discs - really?

carocaro · 24/10/2010 11:36

Why is the Deputy PM on Desert Island Discs right now?

I don't get it. I don't want to know what his favourite records are and why.

Nobel Peace winners, actors, authors etc YES they have something to say about what they have done.

He doesn't. It's politics, our lives. It's all a PR push to try and raise his profile from tea-boy in waiting.

Knowing that he tried to set fire to a cactus at school will not endear me to him and make me have a different opinion about his politics or policies.

Get off my radio and stop ruining my Sunday.

Absolutely agree ,the spin is making me ill.

carocaro · 24/10/2010 11:44

You can just hear one of his trusted advisors telling him to "put a Radiohead track in to look cool"- Bluegh.

Also, is it me, or does he not finish his sentances? He half does one then starts another!!!

I can't believe it either. It is like orchestrated spin. To try and convince us of the coalition.

Sadly it is not working.

He feels no more 'human' to be - just a little smug really.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 24/10/2010 11:47

quite liked the suggestions of 'Puppet on a String' and 'First Cut is the Deepest' as song choices. Smile

pinkteddy · 24/10/2010 11:49

How about 'King of Pain'?!

Apparently he said he would want to take his cigarettes with him Hmm

BerryScaryJuice · 24/10/2010 11:51

Is he a smoker? Shock

I REALLY didn't know that.

carocaro · 24/10/2010 11:52

Gushing over his kids..........my sick bucket is overflowing

Blair went on - think Thatcher did too.

Chil1234 · 24/10/2010 13:14

I enjoyed the programme. Desert Island Discs is not some big cheesy sleb number like 'Piers Morgan interviews...' complete with close-ups for tricky questions so we can see some no-mark's eyes wet with tears.

He's the Deputy PM that no-one had heard of up until a few years ago. I think that meteoric rise is an interesting enough story by itself and why shouldn't we find out a bit more about him?

Anniegetyourgun · 24/10/2010 13:52

On the plus side, isn't it lovely to be able to imagine Nick Clegg marooned on a desert island. I hope he's so comfortable there that he never feels the need to build a raft.

Hedgeblunder · 24/10/2010 13:52

Eurgh yuck, I'm suprised he managed to pull his head out of daves arse for long enough to do anything at all.
I bloody voted for that man, one of the worst decisions I have ever made.

TheFoosa · 24/10/2010 14:14

Tony Blair was on GMTV and Richard & Judy

I think Desert Island Disks is classy in comparison

TheFoosa · 24/10/2010 14:15

discs ffs

atswimtwolengths · 24/10/2010 14:17

I thought he came across well and certainly had enough right to be on there. I like to know about people's backgrounds and their choice of music etc - better to know than not to know.

Though I still remember Michael Heseltine (I think) choosing Land of Hope and Glory. Hmm don't think he actually listened to much music.

And as for Radiohead - of course he'd listen to them. I can't imagine him putting up with anyone telling him which bands he should like.

carocaro · 24/10/2010 14:25

Do you need to know about the life of you doctor, dentist, teacher, petrol pump attendant, butcher bake candlestick maker? Just because he is the DPM does not automatically make him interesting.

I do not need to know anything about his life, it does not make him a better politician.

The other political figures had finished their jobs by the time they went on DID and were are part of key moments on history. He has just started his. He is not interesting. Yet.

THE only reason for him to be on is to try and make us like him. Nothing other than that.

um - i definitely thought all of Tony Blairs picks had been made by a PR committee beforehand.

and Gordon Brown went on before he was PM - in fact Sue Lawley asked him if he was gay!

I thought it was a pretty tough interview all told 'don't you ask yourself every day if you can support what you're doing'?? etc was very hard questioning - this was not an easy PR stunt at all

Nick Clegg seemed to stand his ground though. He has, after all, finally got the Lib Dems sitting on the government benches andhaving more of a say in policy than they could from the opposition benches. They just need to nail that last point home to their support base - a support base that at least in theory supports coalition politics.

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 14:34

I agree though, that i woud prefer it if politicins only went on after their retirement - then you get to hear tunes you can be certain genuinely represent their taste.

Edwina Curry picked Hymn To Joy if i remember correctly....

emy72 · 24/10/2010 15:25

Not faintly interested in Nick Clegg, Tony Blair and Thatcher were PMs, but what is he exactly and what does he represent, as it is not clear to me at all.

The Spin hasn't worked on this occasion!

2rebecca · 24/10/2010 15:27

Why shouldn't he be on there? At least I've heard of him. If you don't want to listen to it then don't. He isn't a vacuous celebrity he's our deputy prime minister.I'll probably listen again as was busy (if it's on there).

LostArt · 24/10/2010 15:44

I have no problem with him being on desert island discs, but the music choice is definitely decided by committee - didn't David Cameron pick Radiohead too (and The Smith, come to think of it Hmm)? Perhaps that's how they bonded - late night meeting with The Bends playing in the background.

Chil1234 · 24/10/2010 16:10

"Just because he is the DPM does not automatically make him interesting."

So you're OK with completely ignoring the person a plane-crash away from running the country beyond a few offical speeches and his employment record? I think you'd have liked Soviet Russia... that's the kind of faceless bureaucrat they used to specialise in.

2rebecca · 24/10/2010 16:13

I find Radiohead really boring. I know they're very "right on" and all that, but it is whiny self obsessed drivel, and I can never remember any of their tunes.
Agree the politicians music does sound very selected by committee, but even that can be interesting, and lead you to wondering why the committee chose this piece.

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 17:45

lostart i just can't envisage such a meeting without DC spliffing up.....

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 17:54

de gustibus non disputandem.

waynoway · 24/10/2010 19:49

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't think you get your PR to call Desert Island Discs. They call you. Did NC pick his list? Could I imagine him listening to all of the tracks here, or is this an Arctic Monkeys moment'? It's the BBC's call as to who's on. I've never understood why actors get the call - they are generally only repeating lines someone else has written or directed. At least NC is a public figure with opinions. Get over it.
