Yes it is outrageous but I think that's the point.

It draws attention to a serious topic which leads to more awareness which could help combat the evil buggers.

BessieBoots · 24/10/2010 09:41

I think it does a good (and shocking) job of highlighting the topic.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 24/10/2010 09:45

Sorry....I had meant to post again before anyone else but I got sidetracked! I wrote the OP like that to ensure it got viewed!

This was a video shown at the Feminist in London conference yesterday, one of the many many inspiring things that happened yesterday. I implore everyone to attend one next year.

What do you mean can anyone else do this?

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 24/10/2010 09:46

Well done for posting this to get it seen.

Btw I haven't been travelling on the tube much recently (on mat leave) but I caught sight of part of a poster yesterday which said 'only 6% of prostitutes report having been coerced' does anyone know what the campaign is? It struck me as a really irresponsible statement but I don't know if I just caught part of the message.

Muser · 24/10/2010 09:58

Sounds like The Economist's ad campaign DialM. Two posters side by side giving the for and against arguments about controversial topics. One is on prostitution.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 24/10/2010 09:59

How on earth did that get through? That's a bit like the stupid 'women who work' campaign thing.

OP posts:
Muser · 24/10/2010 10:08

Some people think prostitution should be legalised. It's a valid argument to have, that one even divides feminists. The ad campaign does legalising drugs and I think possibly euthanasia. It is done intelligently, not like that bloody women who work one.

I'm trying to find a copy of the ad but my googling skills have failed me.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 24/10/2010 10:12

I'm not sure that anyone should ever print a poster that says only 6% of prostitutes report having been coerced. I think it is misleading and dangerous, people believe printed things, people will think after reading that that only 6% of prostitutes have been coerced...which is completely different but very damaging to women and more justification for people who use prostitutes.

OP posts:
Muser · 24/10/2010 10:17

Oh I'm not going to defend that stat for a second. I think it's highly dodgy and I'd not really want it on a poster either as it's not really the right format to do a proper rebuttal of it.

I have found the debate page on The Economist's website if you want to have a read

DialMforMother · 24/10/2010 10:17

Besides which only 6%? That's one in about 15. I think that's quite high. And what defines 'coerced'?

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 24/10/2010 10:20

I'm going over to the dark side....back in a mo'.

OP posts:
Curiousmama · 24/10/2010 10:34

That's like saying only 1% of women have ever been raped.... I know a lot Sad

Curiousmama · 24/10/2010 10:34

Or whatever amount get to court I meant to say.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 24/10/2010 10:53

That's an awful video. Did they give you any idea how much of a problem this is in the UK? How many girls are trafficked? Is there any information about them? age range etc? The video used 2 young-looking white girls who looked like they're living in an inner city area - is that casting coincidence or is that the typical victim group? What is being done specifically to target the victim group to help protect them?

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 24/10/2010 15:37

There are a number of organisations that are looking at this,
Stop Sex Trafficking of Children & Young People...check them out on facebook. 'Object' probably deals with this too.

I think it's a very powerful video about a very important issue.

Teddy - the girls are all nationalities, either vulnerable British girls - ie those in the care system, or young (often underage) girls especially bought here to be sex slaves

Cat it's figures like that which really give the lie to the whole 'feminism has gone too far' argument which saddens me everytime I see it and saddens me twice when I see it on Mumsnet coming from women. :(

YunoWhatYouDidLastSummer · 24/10/2010 18:03

So, we post the video to raise awareness... but is there anything else that we can do?
