to think £50 will buy us a bloody good day out?

NPower sent me a £50 refund today which I cased at the post office. (Wo-hoo!) In response to me saying it had come just at the right time for a half-term day out for me and my DS the cashier said 'you'll need more than that!'

Rough calculation of a couple of train tickets (£12), entrance fee to a museum (£7) a trip to the gift shop afterwards... hell, I'll even stretch to lunch out at Mickey D's rather than the usual pack-up... I'd be disappointed if I didn't come home with most of my £50 still intact. AIB an U and deluded old skinflint to still think £50 is a lot of money?

No - I think it's a lot of money. Would even do a theme park with a picnic on a two for one. 34 + 12 = 46 - 4 over for the gift shop. And that's a big big day out.

Mine just loved leaf kicking and conker collecting at this time of the year - free!! with some left over for a few more treats and something for you too. Mum's deserve something too.

We do loads of free stuff but there's a 'Horrible Histories' Exhibition on at the Imperial War Museum in London this week and I thought that would be an excellent 'big day out'. (Big fan of Horrible Histories myself, apart from anything)

it depends where you go, maybe she was thinking of somewhere like chesington where £50 just about gets you through the door.

onceamai · 23/10/2010 14:02

Sounds fab - hope you both really enjoy it.

Took DS to London Transport Museum on the fast train the other week - possibly the happiest day of his entire life so far. Only downside I had to carry him kicking and screaming to change nappy and go home, he was so determined to spend the rest of his life playing with toy trains in the cafe. Tenner for me, free for him plus train fare for me. He had his first happy meal that day too.

YANBU. I'm lucky to live near London, but could think of several fantastic days out that could each be done for maybe £20.

sorry to Hijack but want to take the kids to London for an overnight in Dec (DSs 8 and 5yrs). What child friendly places activities do you recommend. Neither have been before.

pozzled · 23/10/2010 14:05

Does depend on the age of the children though.

pozzled · 23/10/2010 14:08

fastedwina A walk along the south bank, see the London Eye, houses of parliament etc. London Aquarium if you're prepared to spend a bit. A trip to Hamleys is great but will be very busy in Dec. Trafalgar square- xmas tree and lights will be up. The science museum is also great for kids and is free.

Me and ds (nearly 3) can have a good day out for £3.60. We just buy a day rover ticket for the buses and go riding round for a few hours with a few sandwiches in a bag

fastedwina · 23/10/2010 14:11

thanks Pozzled, want them to have a great time. Anyone recommend the Tower of London for this age?

Decorhate · 23/10/2010 14:28

Chil I have been to that Horrible Histories thing & it was good. The rest of the museum was very busy though so we didn't hang about. Agree that £50 is plenty for a good day out.

I might do the Transport Museum this halfterm. Although adults have to pay, according to the website you then get free entry for the following year if you hang on to your ticket...

Fastedwina, the only thing I would say about the Tower is that it is very popular with tourists so often has very long queues, so your dcs might get bored.

All the free museums are very good, British Museum & Natural History haven't been mentioned yet.... For allnif them I would aim to get there for opening time as they get very busy.
