Really.

I have friends that live on a boat, eat omegron produce, organic meat from local butchers etc yet still buy in tins of asdas on pedigree chum.

And people laugh at my great aunt because she gives her cat tuna steaks and cream.

It works both ways sometimes (althought I do agree with you on the whole) - I used to buy my cat the most expensive organic cat food I could buy- he got a serious mouth infection and I got an absolute bollocking from the vet! Now he's on tuna and chicken!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/10/2010 00:04

Dogs will eat shit (literally). Cream is not good for cats.

Mumcentreplus · 23/10/2010 00:22

ok...they are animals..so to compare is wrong anyway...tbh tuna is not so hot for pets (high mercury content) and most cats don't adapt too well to dairy...but somehow I feel you know this OP..Wink

seeker · 23/10/2010 00:36

Er..because they are animals????

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/10/2010 00:44

Saw premium tuna cat food in Asda. Actual tins of tuna (dolphin-friendly for human consumption) were cheaper. Why?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/10/2010 00:50

DioneTheDiabolist, because some dafties will pay more for the food for their beloved pets/companions than they will for themselves. And think they're doing the best by them. :(

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/10/2010 01:02

So is it just another case of advertiser's wet dream, as I had thought?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/10/2010 01:03

Yes, almost certainly. :(

seeker · 23/10/2010 01:22

And anyway, cat food should be mouse flavoured, or sparrow flavoured. When did a cat last see a tuna?

WingDad · 23/10/2010 01:24

We feed our cat Tesco Value food sachet thingys and he loves them! He does get a few bits of the Sunday roast if he's lucky with a spot of gravy. His little treat Grin

Dogs have evolved on human left-overs and discarded unmentionables. I don't see the point in worrying about their diets if they seem happy and healthy.

fanjolina · 23/10/2010 07:16

My dad just shoots then skins rabbits to feed the cats - so they are on a healthy organic diet, with no processed crap Wink

AIBU to wonder why some owners are so precious about what they feed their pets when there are millions of starving people in the world?

ceres · 23/10/2010 08:38

i feed my dog naturediet. wouldn't touch pedigree or any comparable tinned food.

and yes, i am precious about what i feed him. because he is my responsibility and i love him.

while there isn't a lot i can do about the millions of starving people in the world, i can ensure i look after my dog to the best of my abilty and resources.

I would feed my children better than I feed my cat... if I had to make the choice and I believe thats the correct choice is it not?

My cat is fed home-made food rice, fish, parsley, chicken mix..

To me it's that simple..if you want to get bent out of shape by them being called just animals it's your business..it's a fact

An animal's dietary requirements are pretty different from a human's. Unless you are an animal nutritionist, you don't know what constitutes a "good" diet for a dog or cat. Many "superior" diets are so high in protein that they are not good for cat's kidneys, and dogs are natural scavengers, so benefit from plenty fibre/ undigestable bulk in their diet. So sometimes the cheaper foods are actually a more appropriate diet for the animal, despite manufacturers claims!

Vallhalloween · 23/10/2010 15:45

What ceres said. My dogs are fed on Naturediet too. Not cheap, but worth it, and so are my dogs.

Jellykat · 23/10/2010 16:31

Agree Val, feed my dog 'Burns', hypo allergenic and low protein, i reckon if you make the choice to have a pet, you should do look after them properly!
