hanging washing outside - would this BU?

I have one of those rotary washing lines in the back garden

trouble is at this time of year the garden is in shade 90% of the time and nothing dries

WIBU to put the washing line in the front garden? its warm and sunny on that side of the house! we are a small cul de sac, with open front gardens - no more than a small patch of grass - just enough room to do it!

what do you think? BU or perfectly sensible

there will be absolutely NO undies on display if that makes a differeence! LOL

No. I wouldn't.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 20/10/2010 11:57

You'd be better off asking the neighbours than us...

lollipopshoes · 20/10/2010 11:58

on the one hand - why not? it's your garden, you can do what you like.

But... my neighbours would deffo complain about this!

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 20/10/2010 12:04

the trouble with asking the neighbours outright is that face to face with an enquiry like that one might say "don't mind at all" but secretly think "what a loon"

so I needed to canvas opinion first.

they might all think what a great idea and copy me!

then again,if anyone round here is a MNer, i'll have well and truly outed myself!

solution: you'll ALL have to go hang your washing out front so no one knows i was the OP!! yes, that would work

the other option is washing drying indoors for the next 5 months and the windows open and dehumidifier on - house already very damp

It certainly wouldn't bother me, I used to hang my washing in the front garden when I lived in Turkey as we didn't have a back garden.

I would be a bit worried about someone taking something here in London though!

scotsmuminengland · 20/10/2010 12:05

I wouldn't but I was in the North East a while ago and there was a part (can't remember which) where all the washing was hanging outside the front. I think the gardens were designed that way. It looked very unusual, I have to say. I wouldn't complain if my neighbours did this as it is their property but I know a lot who would. What could they do though?

Thingumy · 20/10/2010 12:05

My neighbours wouldn't care.

It's your garden,hanging washing up isn't a blooming crime!

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 20/10/2010 12:08

I am a very tolerant neighbour myself if that makes any difference, never bother about dozens of kids sitting right outside my window etc etc

theft not an issue, i really dont think (and no stuff worth nicking anyway)

It's your garden - do what you like

It's not going to be out there every day of the year is it?

bnm · 20/10/2010 12:11

definately not - could be the start of neighbourhood going downhill at the very least!

campocaro · 20/10/2010 12:12

Do it

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 20/10/2010 12:17

neighbourhood going downhill? - in what way?

lots of the neighbours have tumble driers and use then all year,i dont have one, i want to do my bit for the environment and use the sunshine while its here!

OP posts:
scotsmuminengland · 20/10/2010 12:21

I hate tumble driers. DH wants to get one but I refuse as it is a waste of money. If I run out of drying space, I use radiators and dining room chairs.

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 20/10/2010 12:22

yes i use the rads and chairs too, plus clothes horses, but drying outside would be quicker and better for the house (we have a damp problem)

I have a fold out thingy (technical term) that you hang shirts on when you've ironed them. You could put wet clothes on hangers and put them on one of these and just stand it out the front when it's a sunny day, then take it down when the washing is dry.

If you did want a permanent line out the front, your neighbours may not like it but it's really none of their busness if it's your property. My mum never used to like it when one of her neighbours took his car apart on his front garden, but it was his garden so he could do what he liked.

clayre · 20/10/2010 12:27

i often stick a clothes horse in my front garden as the back gets no sun, the neighbours started copying me, then i got a wee portable rotary airer for the front garden and they copyed me again!

SheWillBeLoved · 20/10/2010 12:30

I wouldn't do it personally. I'd cringe if I saw a neighbour doing it. That's not to say you shouldn't, if you want to do it and don't mind people inspecting your bits as they pass by then go for it. Your garden, put what you like in it.

shinyshoes · 20/10/2010 12:31

do it if that's how you have to get your washing dry.

Don't worry whay your neighbours think it's your garden and theres more things in the world to worry about than someones washing

throckenholt · 20/10/2010 12:38

To be honest the chances of washing drying outside for the next 5 months is slim anyway. Even on a bright windy day you would have to have it out by the crack of dawn for it to stand a chance of drying.

Having said that I would have no objections to you hanging washing out in the front.

chubbleigh · 20/10/2010 13:05

I used to do this all the time, I put it on a three sided airer and put it outside the front door in the sun. If you need to whip it in for any reason you can just lift it up or move it to another sunny spot.
