Delightful lady I know vaguely asked if I'd like to join. Should I? Do they frown on swearing?

I have joined but not been able to get to my meeting yet - one before last they had somebody come and teach the Beyonce Single Ladies dance - think it very much depends on the group/chapter/whatever it is they are called.

MiasmARGGHHH · 19/10/2010 20:09

I'm considering it myself, I want to meet some women with some actual interests in something other than drinking.

Is it frightfully middle class though ? 'cos I aint.

Summerbird73 · 19/10/2010 20:11

one of my old schoolfriends goes to one in the north east, i saw some photos on her FB page of one of their piss ups social gatherings and it looked like rather jolly good fun - and she is in her early 30s

you know i could really fancy it myself now...

Now come on ladies! Let's not let the side down! We must all try to make chute today!

That would be said as the Brown Owl (or whatever they have at WI) whizzes down the chute in her tweed skirt!

SmacsGotABigWitchyWart · 19/10/2010 20:21

I've been thinking about it too but wonder if my local group would be old fuddy duddies or a younger group.
I like making jam, I like drinking, I rarely get out the house without the children, I can manage a conversation without saying fuck by accident Wink I might give them a call tomorrow.

Thankyou Summerbird I shall look into it further. Could be a whole new world I'm missing out on!!

PandaNot · 19/10/2010 20:30

DurhamDurham I'm in Durham too and have always quite liked the idea of the WI. Let me know if you locate a 'youthful' group!

Pixie83 · 19/10/2010 20:31

Dora I would say anyone who uses the word 'delightful' would fit in fine Wink

DoraBelvedon · 19/10/2010 20:33

Grin I shall look into it. I have twait until the first wednesday of the month and will report back.

PandaNot if I find a youthful group I will insist you come with me cos I'm not very good at joining new clubs/groups! Grin

choufleur · 19/10/2010 20:51

Oh my village has one. THey all look older than me though www.thewi.org.uk/standard.aspx?id=19538

choufleur · 19/10/2010 20:52

And the doll thing is a bit freaky IMO.

Chatelaine · 19/10/2010 20:57

choufleur - Do you have something against older, experienced women? Are you ageist? (withholds smile emoticon}

WhatsWrongWithYou · 19/10/2010 21:07

I flounced from left our WI earlier this year.
A friend started it as a new group and we were keeping it going, but tbh I got fed up with the lack of input from the rest of the group, who would refuse to put forward any ideas and then moan at the schedule the committee drew up.

Plus, as a small group, we used to do as many activities and talks as we could ourselves, but even so the cost of getting speakers in always seemed to be high; plus the WI takes a sizeable chunk of funds, so we were always trying to think up ideas for fund-raising.

Now, call me a kill-joy, but holding a fund-raiser to enable a load of middle class women to sit and natter and watch a cooking demonstration for an hour is hardly feeding the starving!

As you were.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 19/10/2010 21:09

NB: I sidn't really flounce, I started a night class on the same night as our meetings were held (in case anyone that knows me reads this Smile).

choufleur · 19/10/2010 22:12

No - but if I'm going to a group I would guess I'm more likely to have things in common with them if some are around my age (not all, I'm sure I'd get on with people of another generation [and do, but I generally do socialise with them, except my mum]).

I still think the doll thing is a bit freaky.

Chatelaine · 20/10/2010 14:50

I think it a shame and waste when people consciously confine themselves to a particular group, be it based on age, gender, race, religion or social group.

ForMashGetSmash · 20/10/2010 23:48

Chofleur...HOW is knitting and dressing dolls for charity freaky?
