I have a safety gate on my toddlers bedroom but she's getting a bit big for it now.
Just wanting to pick peoples' brains as to how they safety proof their house. All medicines etc are locked away but I'm struggling to find somewhere to put door/window keys where toddler can't get them as she's a climber. What do people on here do? I was looking at a child safety website that said you should alarm all doors and windows but surely that's a bit excessive?!
Any advice appreciated.

No idea.

Hmm. I don't really have any safety equipment now (mine are 4, 2 and 2).

dementedma · 19/10/2010 14:04

Put velcro on back of child's clothes.
put velcro on bed.
Stick both together.
Sorted.

if you have the wall space in your hall get a keyrack/ cupboard. that way all keys are together, and out of little hands reach :)

MmeBodyInTheBasement · 19/10/2010 14:06

I used to put the window keys onto a key ring and put them in my room in the wardrobe. Although if you have to get out of the house in a hurry, that is a problem I guess.

Nail above each window?

GloomyTubeNosedBat · 19/10/2010 14:07

I found almost every piece of safety equipment, apart from stairgates, to be more or less useless. Those crappy plastic knob things you put to stop them banging their heads on sharp corners for instance - DS picked them off 5 seconds(or was it 4?) after I'd stuck them down, and then tried to eat them.

My method? Running around like a headless chicken for two years grabbing them and going "Nooooo please keep away from that", and turning into total paranoid nutter. Great for weight loss and thank goodness the toddler phase is now over (until dc3 arrives....)

nymphadora · 19/10/2010 14:11

I stuck those plastic hooks on each window frame & hung the key on them. Not attractive but practical.

Rosebud05 · 19/10/2010 14:11

Our window keys are in high places near each window (with some spares in a drawer).

I keep my front door key on a hook high up on the front door (not visible from outside as we have two doors).

Other keys on a hook ring inside a cupboard which is quite awkward to get into.

I've also given my kids old sets of keys, which really does make keys seem less interesting to them.

YABextremelyU to post in the wrong topic and have an unhelpful thread title that gives no clue as to its contents.

thequimreaper · 19/10/2010 14:16

Thanks some good ideas. The other problem like someone said is that you don't want them to be too inaccessible in case there's an emergency....

I agree about the corner protectors Gloomy - had to superglue mine on and they still fell off!

I totally agree with the poster who said that all the safety gadgets are useless......DD could get passed ANYTHING at that age ( & younger as a very early walker Shock ) ....

I gave up & found that the best thing I could do was EDUCATE her .......explain in very simple terms WHY she shouldn't touch, do certain things, give bad example of what might happen if she ignores you, & then learn to trust her whilst keeping a close eye........worked brilliantly with DD, though I reaised I was fighting a losing battle the day she took a bottle of pills from my handbag, undid the child proof cap.....the one I couldn;t get off easily Shock, tipped the drugs into my hand , whilst scolding me "naughty Mummy, dangerous" Confused Shock

though for gads sake DO be clear, & DON"T say anything like my Mum did, whilst trying to scare me off putting things into sockets.... she told me "don't to do that as it's dangerous, & you'll go up in a blue light" ....I clearly remember REALLY wanting to see what the blue light looked like & was apparently obsessed with sticking things in sockets Shock

Blutak high up on the wall. Stick the key into the Blu-Tak. Very low-tech, but useful!
