To take this back...?

This may get a bit unnecessarily long considering it's a small issue, but I wanted to give all info.

Anyway, we have no money atm due to unemployment. The JobCentre have not given us any money for 7 weeks due to complete incompetence (even they've admitted it, we're eligible and everything). So money is an issue, otherwise I wouldn't be worrying about this.

We have two unassembled bookcases which really needed to be put up because the flat is full of course books and folders, etc.
We opened the boxes up and discovered they required two screwdrivers to assemble. Both crosshead screwdrivers but different sizes. Partner went to small local tool shop and bought a screwdriver with 4 different heads. Two sizes of each type. It was somewhere around £1.80.

He bought it earlier today, and already one of the heads is useless. We've only had it one evening and all we've done is assemble two bookcases! It's hard to explain but it's sort of twisted and the crosshead bits no longer grip a screw. If we'd managed to finish the bookcases I wouldn't mind so much, but it gave up halfway through, so unless I take it back and ask for a new one we'll have to spend another £1.80 on another screwdriver to finish putting up the bloody bookshelves! (I know that's not much but you can buy better ones on Amazon for only about £2.00 and we literally don't have that much to waste).

I don't understand why it's broken so quickly. It did slip occasionally on the screws and I know that's bad for them, but surely it should manage at least 2 hours of use? Slightly paranoid they'll tell us we're using it wrong or something, but it just doesn't seem like it was fit for purpose.
So, AIBU to take it back and attempt to get a replacement or refund for the grand total of £1.80?

Yanbu! It is not fit for the purpose for which it is intended! And must be made of really soft metal if it has bent so easily!! take it back and get a refund then you cab buy a better replacement elsewhere!
Best ever set of screwdrivers I got was I small box set of 8 from Muji in a little plastic case! My mum and sis both have a set and since we bought them have never needed to buy any others! Never though I could get excited about tools!!Grin

Lol! I was debating trying to find a cheapish set. I would be prepared to spend a bit more if I know it will last.

Was it this one? www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?V=1&Sec=6&Sub=32&PID=701 That's the kind of thing I was thinking of getting.

I feel a bit guilty actually because it's a small local shop and I feel I should be supporting them. On the other hand, things should work whether you pay £2.00 or £20. I wasn't expecting years of service from the screwdriver, a couple of months would have done.

Yes those are the ones...i would have done you a link except I'm not very technically minded and dont know how!!Blush

Well done for trying to support local shop...I do that too as I know times are tough...maybe you could do exchange for different item rather than refund then....as long as you can get something that you actually need?! Otherwise for once it will be their loss...maybe will encourage them to sell better quality screwdrivers!Wink

if it was slipping then it was maybe the wrong size head for the screw in which case you will knacker if if you keep using it.

Skyrg · 18/10/2010 22:08

I don't think so thisisyesterday, seemed to be a good size, it was more when the screw got harder to screw in that it slipped occasionally. In my experience that usually ruins the screw head, not the screwdriver though Confused

We did try originally with a normal screwdriver which kept slipping because it was not a crosshead. All that did was ruin one of the screws.

Also, even if it did have an effect on the screwdriver, surely it wouldn't render it useless after only an evening? And... uh... 32 screws?
