To think this phone chugger was well out of order?

So I answer the phone and it's a begging charity (quelle surprise!)

I soften a little when I hear he is calling on behalf of GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital).

But I make it very clear from the start of the conversation that I have no spare money whatsoever and could not commit to a direct debit, no matter how small.

Fine, he says, we just want to inform you about the work we do if you have the time. Of course I do.

So for the next 5 minutes he tells me about the wonderful work they do and also how they desperately need to update the building.

Great , I say, and good luck with the fundraising, at which point he tells me that he is a professional salesperson employed by GOSH and he has been paid £4.50 for that call.

AIBU to think he is a TWAT of the highest order to get paid for a call that was going nowhere from the start?

So I don't think it should be stopped - charities need to generate as much income as possible.
I do agree that it is very annoying to be stopped by your 8th chugger in the city centre though. But I just politely say that I can't afford to donate and move on.

I get bags through the door to put my clothes in form GOSH fine they can put them through my door but they need to get a grip and realise that Bimringham Childrens hosptial is 20 miles away and GOSH is 100 miels away and I want to support local charities

it would be the same for a hospice - I support the local hospice and the one in the next town but I am not going to support a hospice 50 miels away

it will take the money out of the area and all these charities are working to fund - but treading on other charities toes is not on and that is what I object to

I think GOSH is a special case whe it comes to stepping on other charities' toes as they have specialist equipment and staff their that people all over the country need when their kids are seriously ill.

I had one say "don't you care about sick children?" when I politely explained I don't sign up to these things in the street.

I just replied "you know what? No I don't." Obviously that isn't true but his rudeness deserved to be met with contempt.

eventide - but perhaps the other hosptials would have the specialist equipment if they hadn't had their toes squashed with the donations

Perhaps the equpment and staff shoudl be better placed in the center of the country instead of in the south east which is more tricky to get to than somorwehre further north

I was just pointing out that it's a bit different from, say, a charity in London asking for donations in Birmingham when Birminham have their own local branch of the charity.
