To be worried about my 7 week old?

Pigeonstreetrocks · 16/10/2010 19:53

My 7 week old ds has not fed since 3.30/4 this afternoon and it's now 7.50pm! He's breast fed and usually feeds every 1-1 & a 1/2 hours which he did up until this afternoon. He seems to have a bad cough and sounds sore throaty :( both dh and dd have sore throats etc. He cried in the car for 25 mins earlier on the way back from town and has now gone to sleep.
Am v worried and dh thinks I'm being daft to be so concerned. Am I???

Does he seem fevered at all?

MrsC2010 · 16/10/2010 19:56

I would phone NHS Direct or someone, I don't necessarily think that something is wrong, but as I have 9wk old DD I know how much these things can stick on your mind so try to put it at rest. I'm sure she is ok, but they seem so small and vulnerable I know. Some babies do go 3 to 4 hrs as a rule anyway, so it probably isn't out of 'normal' bounds yet. If she has been poorly she might be needing sleep...

HecateQueenOfWitches · 16/10/2010 19:57

no. it is always best to err on the side of caution. it is around 4 hours since his last feed, that's not too bad. Sounds like he's come down with the same bug you've got. keep an eye on him. Phone gp for advice. check to make sure he's not dehydrated or got a temperature.

It is always better to get them checked out than not, if you're worried. Just for your peace of mind, if he doesn't feed and seems hot or dehydrated.

I am not a doctor or healthcare professional, just a mum. I am not trying to give professional advice or anything.

I always like to make that clear Grin

You are not being daft. He is your precious DS. I would probably let him sleep and when he wakes if he won't feed but is restless/crying a lot, I'd give NHS Direct a call, if only to put your mind at ease. Best wishes

Altaira · 16/10/2010 19:59

It could be that he's just having a bit of a longer gap between feeds, a change in pattern for him but not worrying in itself.

Are there any other signs he is poorly, eg rash, raised temp, pale colour etc.?

If in doubt, give him a nudge and see if he wants to feed.

Not at all daft to be concerned tho', he's v tiny still.

Not feverish and fontanelle fine - think I'm just being a stress head!

Not daft at all! It sounds like meningitis is on your mind. For what it's worth - much of the info talks about high pitched crying; from my own experience (my DD was 7 weeks) I'd say you have to judge whether his cry is different to normal and if you are in any way unsure, phone NHS for advice. Also any sign of fever, cold hands/feet, paleness - call them...

A cold/cough is most likely - but the nasty stuff does happen and better safe than sorry

oricella · 16/10/2010 20:18

And for good measure anyone reading this threat should have a look at this page to remind themselves of all the signs of meningitis. Chances are you won't need the knowledge - but having it could save a life

Hope your DS gets well soon

Go and get some saline drops...the type that come with a snot sucker...don't know what they're really called...it's like a pipette which you plac by the baby's nostril andsuck the snot out for them. But first see the doctor...as my Mum says...do that and then you can reax..better than worrying for days.

padawan · 16/10/2010 23:08

you're not being daft at all. get your wee one to a doc and put your mind at rest and, if he is unwell, then he can be treated.
