Snap me out of this if IABU

Friend is having fancy dress party for their birthday, no theme 'it'd just be fun for everyone to come in fancy dress'.

Why does fancy dress enhance a party? It's costing me £100, to do costumes for my family, that's a £100 less to spend on food present.

I just see it as an inconvenience, and not adding anything to the party.

AIBU - fancy dress does not add value to a party?

a friend of mine turned up at the last minute when we were going to a fancy dress, without a costume, and he just put his shirt on backwards with a black raincoat over the top and a bit of black tie showing to make a dog collar, and went as a pastor with a bible in his pocket. brilliant! (and free)

Thread is 2 weeks old so the party has probably been and gone.

I know the thread is a bit old but a cheap, quick and easy fancy dress is take one white flat sheet. Make a belt from elastic to go round your waist. Wrap the sheet round yourself and put one corner over your shoulder and tuck into the elastic waistband. Add a purple scarf that goes over your shoulder and under the other arm. Pin in place with brooch/safty pin from charity shop. Find a pair of sandals. Make a wreath from evergreen leaves (staple them on to a length of fabric or paper) to go on your head. Result = Roman Emperor. Practice speech from Julius Caesar. 'Friends, Romans etc...
