He rings once a month asking for someone who does not live here, and I tell him all the time this.

I have signed up with tps six months ago, he rang again today,so I swore and told him where to go,and said if he rang again I would report him aibu?.

Yes, a little bit. I understand your frustration, but the guy on the phone is just doing his job... Find out what company he's from and get to them directly?

BooBooImpaledOnBrokenGlass · 15/10/2010 21:18

To swear and shout yabu. But you are quite right to be angry

wheresmymojogone · 15/10/2010 21:19

Tbh he did not deserve it,but was having a bad day and he got the blunt of it.

Runs away.

I have to admit that after Mil passed away (so me and dh were grieving) I think that I told every single telesales person to fuck off, and I doubt that I was nice about it. As cold callers, they have no idea what you are doing / going through when they call, so tbh it's tough shit. After dd was born I learnt to ignore the phone, and unplugged it whenever she napped. Ring me about fecking double glazing (which I already have, thanks) and wake my baby? I don't think so, sonny jim...

backwardpossom · 15/10/2010 21:25

I got caller ID - any 'withheld' (unless I'm expecting a call from the docs) or 'international' or 0845 number gets ignored.

wheresmymojogone · 15/10/2010 21:30

Thats what I had backwardpossom ,maybe I should just ignore these in future thanks for the advice?.

The people that phone you have no choice who they call, it's all done from a list in a dialler.

Just ignore the calls or report them to the ICO as to where they got your info from.
TPS won't necessarily work as there are lots of loopholes in the process.

YABU, they are just doing their job, just say no thank you politely and put the phone down.
I like your approach MDS, going try that next time.

memoo · 15/10/2010 22:26

My sister use to work in one of these crappy call centres. She would often come home and cry because of the shit and abuse they get from customers.

sheepgowooohooo · 15/10/2010 22:30

I have recently done this too, but we were getting phone calls 1-2 times a day asking for a particular person who lived here before we did. They woke my baby up again and the fella on the end of the phone wouldn't take no for answer so he got an eff off. wrong I know but when you are plagued by these people its no joke and its intrusive

ravenAK · 15/10/2010 22:31

Yeah, I'm sure it's an absolutely crap job.

I just say 'Telephone Preference Service'. Most then apologise (haven't actually bothered to get it; it doesn't seem, judging by previous address, to stop the calls at source).

If they persist, I don't feel obliged to be polite.

DeadPoncy · 15/10/2010 22:33

Not being unreasonable to report his calls but not necessarily him, unless you are absolutely sure it is the same person as before. I don't want to be culturally imperialist, but I find it very difficult to catch the name of some Indian call-centre callers.

However, his/their bosses are being bloody unreasonable to have such crap systems.

P.S. Ah, MadamDeathstare, you're back!

gremlindolphin · 15/10/2010 22:49

I am usually nice to these callers as it is such a shit job but I had one recently who rang just as I was going out (v rare occasion!) and she was lovely and said I could get a free kitchen etc etc and as we are looking to get one I said could she ring back later as I was interested and she said "you're lying" and put the phone down! I was flabbergasted especially as I wasn't lying and she had been so lovely up until then!

I rang them back in the morning and reported her as it was a real company.

backwardpossom · 16/10/2010 00:35

Oh I've been accused of lying before. I was, but that's not the point...

Islandlady · 16/10/2010 00:43

I am getting phone calls all day
for one particular lady who owned the phone number before me, unfortunatly she seems to owe a lot of money and the people ringing me up all the time are Debt collectors and they wont go away and they are very very nasty.

I have no problem at all with telling these people to F right off.

Suda · 16/10/2010 01:06

I was a BT Operator for many years so as a last resort have been known to answer my home phone - when Ive known its an unwelcome call - with - 'Exchange - what number have you dialled ?'. Which is exactly what we said on numbers that had requested operator intercept - usually via the Malicious Calls Bureau - then we would ask who was calling and if they were on the customers 'to be accepted' list we'd put them through. If not we'd decline them.

I usually got away with it - probably sounded convincing as I said it at work for real but one day I got a really arrogant Telesales who had phoned me repeatedly wouldnt take no for an answer etc - so I answered him with my work spiel.
He wasnt my easiest 'victim' I must say but had just nearly managed to persuade him he was being intercepted and could not get past me - and should hang up when my doorbell rang and my dog started barking Blush.

Talk about rumbled !

ravenAK · 16/10/2010 01:31

But why would you bother?

I don't get why they're such a menace to so many people.

You say: 'We have Telephone Preference, please don't call us again', & if they persist, you say: 'I've already explained that I don't want to be cold-called, which is why I have TPS, & your attempt to continue this unsolicited call is not appreciated - can I have the number for your Head Office, & your name please, so I can complain?'

Or just put the phone gently down & go off to do something else until they get bored with trying to sell to thin air...

I appreciate that it's a horrible job, & I wouldn't actually be abusive to some poor sod who'd felt obliged to take it on.

Equally, though, I'm not sure that making polite excuses or using stalling tactics is doing someone stuck in that job much of a favour - if you aren't going to buy whatever it is, better for them if you're off the line quickly so they can pester contact the next number on their automatic dialler.

ravenAK · 16/10/2010 01:37

Oh & Islandlady, you can sic the Office of Fair Trading on debt collectors if they're hassling you, & it's not your debt.
