The bizarre benefits cheats who are caught on film make me laugh.

You will have seen the following:

The one filmed running in a marathon and staring at the camera.

The older bloke playing football very vigorously.

The recent one driving a van whilst claiming
incapacity.

The running linesman doing a good job on incapacity.

The golfer playing a nifty round.

Yes, "poorly" I agree. The system is very complex.

New "testing" of incapacity claimants. This
is already throwing up strange decisions.

The OP was clearly just pointing out the people that are taking the mick. I know of half a dozen people that boast that they are getting away with claiming DLA when they could work. The figures don't make sense, how can the numbers claiming DLA, increase year on year when medical advances would surely less people would have to claim. It defies logic. Its just yet another example of Labour's lack of hold on handing out cash.

pigletmania · 15/10/2010 15:02

They are quite funny, are they stupid, some are so thick.

Hammy

try filling in a claim form and see if its so easy.

reasons for rise- elderly population, more people not being assigned to care homes, better information, improved diagnostic techniques, rises in rates of obesity and related disorders such as cancer (cancer patients qualify)....

lots of reasons

cory · 15/10/2010 15:06

I get that, Hammy. What I do not get is how you can look at one snapshot of a person's life and deduce that because they are capable of say, kicking a football at one moment, they are capable of holding down a job every day. This betrays crass ignorance of the nature of intermittent disabilities, which are many and varied. But which are a very effective barrier to most jobs.

As for medical advances, they also ensure that a good many disabled babies survive who would not have survived years ago. And as yet, no medical advances have been found that can do away with stress in the workplace or mental health issues.

cory · 15/10/2010 15:09

I know it is attitudes like this that made dd try to cut her wrists last winter. Because she thought people were bound to think her a fraud if she was not always disabled to exactly the same degree. Seems she was right. Sad

cory · 15/10/2010 15:10

Yup higher cancer survival rates definitely a factor. MIL has been disabled from cancer for the last 5 years. But of course 30 years ago, that problem would have been solved Hmm

Hammy02 · 15/10/2010 15:20

DLA for alcoholics and the obese? Please.

EvilEyeButterPie · 15/10/2010 15:22

DLA isn't employement or income related, but ESA (incapacity as was) is.

I was on incapacity when I was pregnant with DD1 as I spent most days in bed being sick every time I moved. I was in and out of hospital, peeing blood, etc.

On a rare good day, I managed to meet a friend in town for a coffee and to watch one act of an all day festival. From then on I had accusations of "faking" chucked at me. :(

So ill and disabled people should sit in the house with the curtain closed, weeping quietly.

Obviously.

Noone seems to be paying much attention to Riven's and my posts about intermittent disorders. I can assure you that dd is neither obese nor an alcoholic.

cory · 15/10/2010 15:25

sorry cross-posted there with people who are paying attention

2shoeprintsintheblood · 15/10/2010 15:25

What drove dd into depression was partly the conflict between doctors who told her she had to be as active as possible whenever she could and the realisation that this would make people think of her as a fraud. So if she just stayed in bed, the doctors made her feel that it was her own fault for not really trying, and if she got up people would think this proved that she could always get up. Catch 22.

Oh Riven Sad

ScaryMoaningArrrggghhhs · 15/10/2010 15:32

Hammy nobody gets DLA for being obese or an alcoholic

But they may if they suffer disability as a result- eg alzheimers triggered by drinking.

You may think thats unfairt- we'll ahve to disagree

but think on about those left behind- the carers that support tehm- no DLA, no ca for tehm eitehr. it's an absolute rule.

As for obesity- cancer, breathing problems, diabetes and the many disabilties thatc an relate to- blindness, amputation....

PoorlyConstructed · 15/10/2010 15:33

I'm paying attention to you, Riven and cory. I just haven't said anything because I think you've made your point so well.

PoorlyConstructed · 15/10/2010 15:33

Oh Riven, that's absolutely awful. I'm really sorry to hear that.

ScaryMoaningArrrggghhhs · 15/10/2010 15:34

Riv and Cory, hugs from me but you know that.

DS1's AS is something that is classed as ahidden disability- Riv has met him, she can tell you he can appear fine.

here is teh thread I wrote this morning: thats not fine.
