to stick DD's brownie badges on with No More Nails

Why do they send DC home with so many badges that need sewing on?

If she had done something I could understand but the badges are now handed out weekly just for attending. Tonight she came home with 6 to be sewn on. 6 tiny little badges to celebrate 100 yrs .........but last week I had a badge to celebrate 100 years ????? (I know it's special but so are my evenings!!!!!!!!!!!)

One badge will suffice for gawds sake

DD2 had a sash - I tend to advise new Brownie mums now to consider a gilet. I did sew all DD2's badges on, poor DD3 is suffering from Neglected Youngest Child syndrome.
The other annoying thing about sashes is they don't stay on well and I end up with a couple in lost property every week without fail.

Poledra · 12/10/2010 21:51

There is Another Way - have a mother and MIL who are good at sewing and love to do helpful things for their DGD............

SandStorm · 12/10/2010 21:52

I use bondaweb. Never fails and it's the ultimate timesaver.

LabMonkey · 12/10/2010 22:15

I'm a Guide Leader and I'd say until she's capable of sewing them on herself use superglue. FYI double sided sticky tape tends to peel off quite quickly.

psammyad · 12/10/2010 22:49

If you really do want to sew onto the sash, try using a leather needle.

Smallish sewing needle with a really sharp triangular point - but you will need a thimble to stop poking holes in your fingers.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 12/10/2010 22:54

I too have a backlog of DD's Brownie badges to sew on. I too am Brown Owl. Blush

Bondaweb doesn't work - as the sash flexes the badges peel off again. Sewing machine or glue are the only options I think - hand-sewing through the sash is impossible.

emptyshell · 13/10/2010 06:49

You don't need to hand sew THROUGH the sash, you just need to catch the top layer of material with the needle. I used to do my own from Guides up (had the old old uniform in Brownies) with no problems this way.

As for the sashes - hate them, mind you the leader pin on ones we tend to refer to as boobie bangers.

IvantaOuiOui · 13/10/2010 08:12

I save the Brownie badges until Grandma visits, she can sew anything, I can barely thread a needle. I am Tawny Owl at our pack..

DeadBodyofKaraStarbuckThrace · 13/10/2010 08:32

Sounds like the sort of thing I would do.

Pity they don't do iron on badges (I use iron name tapes!)

Try the Woodcraft Folk?!

Grin
kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/10/2010 08:40

Hot glue gun. I'll say no more Grin

Deliaskis · 13/10/2010 09:46

Well I'm a Brownie leader and I say use the glue, or show your DD how to do one, and she can do the rest herself (and lo, another badge!). Seriously, she could.

In our defence (our as in all Brownie/Guiding people), in general they love getting badges, especially for attending events etc.

But glue is a good idea!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/10/2010 09:49

Be careful with a hotglue gun though. DD and I were using one on Sunday. She managed to get a long string of glue hanging off and then trail it accross her arm and onto her legs. Arm was OK, it was covered with a jumper her legs have a lovely red stringy mark on them. the glue doesn't come out in the wash either.

Rockbird · 13/10/2010 09:54

So the upshot of all this is that needlework skills are not an essential requirement for Brownie leadership...?

When I was a guide I used copydex they peeled off eventually, but it held for several months Smile

VictoriasLittleKnownSecret · 09/11/2010 20:53

OK.....update

Two fell off tonight :o

Which would have been bad .....because I now have to sew them on .....but is far worse because DD handed them to me in front of other parents all grouped in the hallway collecting their darling DC and dismissively loudly announced could I PLEASE sew them on and not use glue next time......

At least she gets badges. When I was a Brownie I used to do loads of work for various badges, then Brown Owl would insist she had to get an outside 'Tester' in to 'check' everything, ask me questions, etc, and never bloody bothered! I was a Brownie from just turned 7 until 11 and a half so should have had loads of badges, but actually ended up with about 4!
My niece is now a Brownie, and like a couple of other people have said, her mum waits until Grandma visits and then asks if she would like to do a bit of sewing!

boiledegg1 · 10/11/2010 01:21

Oh dear, try sticks like s**t

DandyDan · 10/11/2010 08:00

At least it's a sash - the badges can stay on it forever. (I did manage to sew badges on ours but it was nightmarish, true.)

But scout badges - the horrors! They have to go on the shirt, including down the sleeve where it's almost impossible to sew without you sewing one side of the arm to the other, or without the badge turning 180 degrees (even with a securing pin in) and looking wonky once you're done. I saved ours up for a year and sewed them all on last weekend, ready for Remembrance Day parade.

And then your child grows and you have to get a new shirt and take all the badges off and sew them all on another shirt: dozens of the things. I know scouts can't wear sashes but moving all the badges every time your child grows is ridiculous.

SandStorm · 10/11/2010 08:01

I use bondaweb. Always have, always will Smile.

scattermummy · 10/11/2010 09:46

my husband redid my cub badges as they were so dire! when child no 2 became a cub she inherited ds 1 jumper ,complete with badges that i did not remove first.Shocking ,i know.Ds 3 will inherit the jumper soon, again with unremoved badges.I admit to feeling a touch guilty about this, especially when someone commented on the amount of badges dd 2 had accumalated in such a short space of time!I work and have 4 dcs and an awful lot of activities to oversee .I am a terrible mum!
