There is such a thing as an unfortunate looking child, yes. Thank heavens mine isn't one of them.

Goblinchild · 12/10/2010 20:17

Some babies appear unattractive to me, but I would never say so. Why would anyone want to cause hurt and upset for no reason?

RandomMusings · 12/10/2010 20:17

who has described a child as ugly?

that is just vile

oh hang on, you're the baybeee with the CM person

hmmmm

mumblechum · 12/10/2010 20:17

It's fine to think it, not fine to say it.

Of course some children are ugly. My mate had two of the ugliest little girls ever, but they're in their early teens now and are drop dead gorgeous.

EricNorthmansMistress · 12/10/2010 20:17

some are less aesthetically pleasing according to societal norms (ugly) that's not really something you can dispute is it? It's not very nice to describe a child as ugly, though I've definitely thought it.

scurryfunge · 12/10/2010 20:17

I don't know anyone who would describe a child as ugly.

lilystyles · 12/10/2010 20:17

I am asking as someone said it to me today about a celebrity child

HalfTermHero · 12/10/2010 20:18

I think that all babies/toddlers look cute in their own unique and adorable little way.

Goblinchild · 12/10/2010 20:18

You can think what you like, saying it is often unacceptable.

CheeryCherry · 12/10/2010 20:18

Wouldn't use the word ugly - but some are definately more pretty/cute/handsome than others ... just the same as adults.

thisisyesterday · 12/10/2010 20:19

well i guess children can be ugly. but beauty is in the eye of the beholder isn't it.... so who are we to say?

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 12/10/2010 20:19

YANBU. It makes me feel uncomfortable too. I bet their mums think they're gorgeous!

However, there are ugly adults, or rather, less attractive ones - agreed?

So, unless they changed as they grew up... Actually I believe that our thoughts show on our faces as we get older, so a happy-go-lucky, positive person will have an open face, and a mean, whingy person will have a pinched face.

monkeyfacegrace · 12/10/2010 20:22

No child can be ugly. Ugly, to me, means inside and out, and children are innocent and pure. There is, however, a girl at my daughters nursery that even a mother must struggle with Grin. But when I look at kids, I just see pure loveliness and dont look at them in that way iyswim?

babywrangler · 12/10/2010 20:22

Yes, me.

I was the fattest, grumpiest, hairiest baby ever. Bloody gorgeous now though! Grin

lilystyles · 12/10/2010 20:23

RandomMusings why is that a 'hmm'? Yesterday I said a situation made me feel sad because - shock/horror- it did. I have just said that it makes me feel uncomfortable when - shock/horror- someone describes child as ugly, why is that 'hmm'?

Beautiful children often do not have the right bone structure to make beautiful adults. Look at Macauley Culkin, the poor thing.

Children who look a bit odd, a bit large featured or horsey, often make STUNNING adults.

Mumcentreplus · 12/10/2010 20:25

True Smells your facial features can be adversely affected by your attitude...namely ugly attitude ugly face..Grin

I think ugly is a bit too strong a word for a baby...all babies are cute FACT! Wink

cupcakesandbunting · 12/10/2010 20:26

Some children are ugly.

You know you think it when you see one, you're just too afraid to say you do. Admitting that you think a kid is ugly is a taboo.

OP, was it said about Peter Andre and Jordan's daughter? She is a weird-looking rugrat!

Mumcentreplus · 12/10/2010 20:27

Thats when you use the word cute cupcake Grin

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 12/10/2010 20:28

Of course there can be 'ugly' children though not in the sense monkeyfacegrace said but ugly in the sense they aren't attractive. There has to be doesn't there because not all adults are attractive to everyone.

Should never be said though - with both adults and children. I'm guessing that whoever said it about the celebrity child was just talking sour grapes (about the level of fame and wealth - I often find that people say these sort of thing even when they aren't factually correct because they are bitter it's not them in those shoes)

There's that saying isn't' there 'a face only a mother could love' Not the most pleasant of sayings.

Obviously my children are incredibly attractive.

lilystyles · 12/10/2010 20:30

I guess children's faces are constantly changing so it would stand to reason that they will look better at some stages of developemnt than others

LeopardSkinPillBoxHat · 12/10/2010 20:31

a woman I know says, cute babies/kids make ugly adults, and ugly babies make beautiful grown ups.. I think its a load of poo myself..

ladymeg · 12/10/2010 20:31

I agree with cupcakes

sleepwhenidie · 12/10/2010 20:32

my mum would always use the term "homely"....

HaveToBeModest · 12/10/2010 20:34

Yes, I think most children are not a patch on mine, but I understand that most parents feel like that!! Ugly is word that most of us wouldn't use on a child, I always associated ugly with a nasty adult.... unattractive, not so pretty, not good looking maybe(never out loud though).
