To wish we were still "benefits scroungers"

Well not really but we would be alot better off than we are now!

DH was laid off from his last job around 2 years ago, so we were forced to claim JSA as there just weren't any jobs. He finally finds one and started 6 weeks ago. We are absolutly no better off money wise infact we are 100% worse off.

From the day he was signed off it was our responsibility to pay full rent and full council tax. We just didn't have nearly £600 lying around so had to borrow it. Now by the time that is paid back it will be time to pay it again so we are going to be constantly living in debt. I phoned my local jobcenter and explained the situation and asked if there is ANY help available and he said "No!" So my reply (getting a little bit pissed off now) was "So you just throw people in at the deep end then" and he said "pretty much yes!". The went on to tell me about someone who hadn't worked for 6 months, was not entitled to any benefits because he left his job and was borderline homeless, He sounded quite smug about it too Hmm

At the least they should give you one extra month of HB and CTB so you can get your feet on the ground before you see your bank account balance turn to £-600 in the blink of an eye.

It's beginning to really get my back up when people call those on benefits scroungers/dole dossers etc. If there was more incentive to start work and there is a chance you would have a better life maybe people would do it!!

Not everyone can go and jump into a £44k a year job and most have to work their way up, living in poverty all the way.

I've seen about 4 facebook statuses today along the lines of "Go and get a fucking job you fucking scroungers" and its really beginning to piss me off.

Felt the need to vent, sorry Blush

:(

Well then he is stupid for not letting it out privately while he is away! I kid I kid Wink

So all the money he has could be hers then? Still not right claiming JSA for a single person and 'living' with someone who works Hmm

YANBU for being pissed off about this - your OH is doing the right thing and being penalised. Do talk to the CAB though - I know you've had it up to the eyeballs, but you should get that money - you and your OH's NI contributions have paid for it!

YABU though for saying "Not everyone can go and jump into a £44k a year job and most have to work their way up". Erm, my DH has just got a job that almost pushes us into the higher tax bracket and he certainly didn't just 'jump into it'. We both got into the jobs we're in (or I was in until recently - redundancy) by working bloody hard, hustling, persevering and being good at what we do. Neither of us started out rich (6 years ago I was earning £10k a year and really struggling) and we've worked bloody hard to get where we are - no-one handed it to us.

Anyhoo, rant over - I just hate this polarisation that's jumping up between twunts shouting 'benefit scroungers with 52" plasmas!' and on the other side 'rich spoilt bastards whinging about their CB'. Nuts

MaMoTTaT · 12/10/2010 19:30

ermm diamond - but that's what she said - about the 44k jobs Confused - she said that not everyone can go and jump into those jobs and theyhave to work their way up - which is what you say you did.

iliketosleep · 12/10/2010 19:32

Ah Diamond, I meant it in a way that for example a solicitor loses their job and then gets another job as a barrister IYSWIM Jumps straight into it. Whereas some people haven't been as lucky and have stayed at the bottom for a long time with no signs of moving. :)

All I can say is, if I won the Lotto, I wouldn't hesitate to sit on my arse in front of the biggest TV I could buy and I wouldn't give a rat's arse about 'pride.'

It's a lonely bedfellow and if it doesn't keep the wolf from the door and food in the wee one's bellies it's worthless to me.

menopausalmum · 12/10/2010 20:23

There is a woman down the road from me, she is married and neither she or her husband have worked in the 15 years I have known them. They have 7 children and probably another one on the way. The council have knocked two three bedroomed houses together for them all to live in rent free and council tax paid for. They receive in the region of £27,000 benefits.

That is what I call taking the piss, they have a nice house big telly all wearing the latest fashion and holidays every year!!!!

cumfy · 12/10/2010 20:47

OP, did you claim the £800 self employment credit, when you went self-employed ?

They should have told you if you were eiligible.

EdgarAllInPink · 12/10/2010 20:54

..tht was exactly the post i wished to void...the onewhere soeone claims you can be better off on beneifts without working...

possibly a tiny minority might manage it, but we, and the vast majority of people are less well off on benefits and would be better off with better pay/ both employed/ earning more...

anyway, if you have to have 7 kids to get that level of benefit, stuff that for a game of soldiers. Paid work would be much easier.

menopausalmum - That rings a bell, have they been in the paper? Or is there more than 1?? I remember reading about someone complaining that their hundreds of kids can't fit into a 4 bedroom house and the council were arseholes for not knocking 2 houses into 1 for them Hmm
